MSUB Yellowjacket Athletics Moment of the Decade
West Region Champions
Sport: Women's Basketball
Result: MSUB 71, No. 13 Alaska Anchorage 70
Date: March 12, 2018
Location: Azusa, California / Felix Event Center
Â
An unquestionable pick for the top moment in Yellowjacket Athletics during the 2010s, the women's basketball team's 2018 NCAA D2 West Region Championship victory was one of the most historic moments in the department's 93-year history.
Â
A remarkable six-game postseason winning streak, five of which came against higher-ranked opponents, culminated in the regional championship game against fellow GNAC school Alaska Anchorage. West Region Championships Most Valuable Player
Rylee Kane hit a pair of last-second free-throws, and West Region Player of the Year
Alisha Breen blocked the Seawolves' final shot attempt as time expired in the one-point victory.
Â
MSUB went on to the NCAA D2 Elite Eight for just the second time in school history, where the dream season came to an end against No. 1 Ashland University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Amid the storybook playoff run was also MSUB's first-ever GNAC Championships title in women's basketball history, as the 'Jackets knocked off No. 1 seed Northwest Nazarene and No. 3 seed Seattle Pacific en route to their first-ever tournament crown.

Result: MSUB 74, No. 15 Alaska Anchorage 70
Date: March 3, 2012
Location: Lacey, Washington / Marcus Pavilion
Â
Claiming the GNAC's most coveted crown, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team rode the underdog wave through the 2012 GNAC Championships to claim their first and only conference title. MSUB upended Western Oregon 80-75 in the quarterfinals, before shocking eventual NCAA national champion No. 11 Western Washington 82-78 to reach the title game. GNAC Championships MVP Robert Mayes continued his hot streak, with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double to help the 'Jackets outlast No. 15 Alaska Anchorage 74-70 to hoist the trophy.
Â
The victory earned the men's basketball team its 10th trip to the NCAA tournament, and its first berth since the 2002 season. In the conference's most competitive sport – with teams from all 10 GNAC schools – the title remains one of the top achievements in the athletic department's history.

Softball Claims First-Ever GNAC Tournament Title
Sport: Softball
Result: MSUB 9, Western Washington 5
Date: May 2, 2015
Location: Yakima, Washington / Gateway Sports Complex
Â
One of MSUB's most consistently successful programs throughout the mid-2000s and early 2010s reached its peak during the 2015 season, winning its first – and only – GNAC Championships title. The Yellowjackets swept through the conference tournament with wins over Western Washington (6-1) and top-seed Saint Martin's (4-3), before a 9-5 triumph in the rematch against the Vikings in the title game.
Â
It was the third overall GNAC title for the softball team, and the tournament victory earned the squad an automatic berth into the NCAA regional where the dream season continued. The 'Jackets knocked off a pair of nationally-ranked opponents to reach the regional championship game, where the top season in program history came to an end with an 11-3 defeat against Sonoma State.

MSUB Wins First-Ever GNAC Tournament Title
Sport: Baseball
Result: MSUB 8, Saint Martin's 5
Date: May 10, 2019
Location: Portland, Oregon / Porter Park
Â
After clinching its fourth regular-season title in a five-year stretch, the Yellowjacket baseball team finally broke through and claimed its first-ever conference tournament title by sweeping all three games at the GNAC Championships. That earned the baseball team a first-ever berth into the NCAA West Region Championships, as the final year of the decade proved to be the most successful in program history.
Â
After beating Saint Martin's 4-2 on Day 1 and smoking reigning tournament champion Western Oregon 10-0 on Day 2, the Yellowjackets struck quickly in the championship game with a three-run first inning and led 5-0 after six frames. The battery when the final out was recorded was fittingly a pair of fifth-year seniors, who had each been a part of all four regular-season titles during the decade.
Jared Winslow threw the final pitch, and catcher
Landon Peterson was first to greet him on the mound to kick off the most significant dogpile in program history.

Palomino's Second-Half Hat Trick Lifts 'Jackets To Comeback Win
Sport: Men's Soccer
Results: MSUB 3, Concordia 2
Date: October 17, 2015
Location: Billings, Montana / Yellowjacket Field
Â
In one of the most heroic performances by any Yellowjacket athlete during the decade,
Ricardo Palomino put the team on his back in the second half of this improbable, come-from-behind victory. The framework for an inspirational performance was set before the match even began, with the day being dedicated to the memory of
Trevor Wildberger on MSUB Kicks Cancer Day.
Â
Things did not go well in the opening 45 minutes however, as the Yellowjackets found themselves staring a 2-0 deficit in the face by halftime. To make matters worse, MSUB received a red card just 10 minutes into the second half, meaning the team would have to complete the comeback while down a player for the final 35 minutes.
Â
Palomino had already netted his first finish by the time the red card occurred, blasting a low free kick from the top of the box inside the right goal post. The equalizer came in the 77th minute, when Palomino galloped down the right touch line carrying the ball from midfield all the way into the box where he smashed home a finish from the close right wing. The game-winner followed in the 81st minute, on a left-footed half-volley after a header pass from Sam Butterworth.
Â
After the game, then-MSUB head coach Alex Balog said, "That game as a whole, was the best that I have ever been involved with, as a player and as a coach. From the front to the back, that was MSUB men's soccer."

Â
Facing the most successful volleyball program in the history of the GNAC, the Yellowjackets pulled off an upset for the ages, with a thrilling five-set triumph over No. 11 Western Washington. After losing the opening set handily, 25-16, the 'Jackets came back to take the next two frames and put the Vikings on their heels. MSUB overcame a 24-22 deficit in the momentum-shifting third set, winning four straight points for a dramatic 26-24 victory.
Â
The decisive fifth set also went down to the wire, before all-decade selections Kyndal Williams and Chelsey Walter combined for the match winning kill. Walter finished with 14 kills, while fellow all-decade selections Ashlynn Ward (19 kills) and Monica Grimsrud (16 kills) led the way offensively. Â
In addition to the team achievements, then-freshman Kortney McNeil set a record of her own with a program-best two-round score of 146 (71-75). McNeil started the tournament off with a 1-under-par 71, which was one stroke off the school record and just the second under-par score in program history. She finished with a 75, which was good enough to tie for eighth place among a field of 100 golfers. The performance earned McNeil the first of her two-career GNAC Player of the Week awards.
