MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Montana State Billings freshman thrower Anica Knispel shattered the old Great Northwest Athletic Conference shot put record Saturday afternoon at the GNAC outdoor championships, becoming just the third Yellowjacket to capture a GNAC title.
Knispel had a record toss of 46-feet, 3/4 of an inch on her second attempt during preliminaries. It easily gave her the title. The previous record was 45-8 by Krissy Tandle of Central Washington in 2007.
Knispel joined Lexi Halverson (discus, 2010) and Richie Pemberton (steeplechase, 2008) as MSUB's only individual champions.
Knispel also surpassed the NCAA Division II provisionalqualifying mark for the national meet. According to head coach Dave Coppock, Knispel currently ranks 21st in the country. The national meet will take between 16 and 20 competitors, depending on the strength ofthe field.
The NCAA DII automatic qualifying mark is 48-4 1/2.
As a team the Yellowjackets had both teams finish in eighth place out of the nine teams competing in the meet. The men's team finished with eight points, one ahead of ninth place Saint Martin's. The women's team also finished one spot ahead of the Saints, earning 21 points, 10 ahead of SMU.
