Preview: MSUB travels to play SPU and SMU

BILLINGS, Mont. –The Montana State University Billings Volleyball team will be on the road against two Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes this week. First MSUB takes on Seattle Pacific University followed by Saint Martin's University.  
 
Yellowjackets will look to halt a six game slide as their last victory came against Rocky Mountain College on October 22nd. The last conference victory was against Saint Martin's Oct. 17.
 
LAST TIME OUT: The MSUB volleyball team lost two matches to fellow GNAC members Northwest Nazarene University 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) and Central Washington University 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13).  
 
Against NNU, Maddi Vigil had a team high 11 kills while hitting .220. Joelle Mahowald led MSUB in hitting efficiency with a .381 hitting percentage. Bayli Monck had a team high 15 digs and Hannah Hashbarger produced 31 assists.
 
In the match versus CWU,Vigil had a team high 13 kills while hitting .167. Monck had a team high 20 digs and Hashbarger produced 39 assists. Marissa Logozzo supplied 10 assists from her libero position in the back line.
 
BY THE NUMBERS: Monck and Vigil lead the 'Jackets attack and are two of four Yellowjackets that have over 200 kills on the season. Monck has 259 (2.64/set) and Vigil has 257 (2.62/set). Those marks represent the 17 and 18 places overall in the GNAC respectively.
 
Skylar Reed has 228 kills (2.33/set) and Mahowald crossed over the 200 kill mark last week with 203 (2.09/set) on the year.
 
Mahowald leads the team in hitting percentage with a .303 which is fifth overall in the GNAC. If the season were to end today, Mahowald would be in eighth place all-time for hitting percentage in a single season at MSUB. Andrea Donahue is the university's single season record holder as she held a hitting percentage of .373 in 2004.
 
Hashbarger is amongst the league leaders in assists as she is currently fifth and leads the team in assists with 781 (9.41/set).
 
Defensively for the 'Jackets, Logozzo leads MSUB with 333 digs (3.66/set) which currently is the 12th best conference mark. Monck is 15th in the conference with 315 digs (3.21/set). Vigil is third on the team with 260 (2.65/set).

Combined, MSUB is seventh in the GNAC in terms of hitting percentage with .178 and is ninth allowing opponents to hit .232.

The Falcons are coming off of a 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Saint Martin's this past Tuesday. In the week prior, SPU lost to Western Washington University 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-11) on Nov. 7 and Simon Fraser University 3-2 (23-25, 19-27, 25-23, 24-26, 15-11) on Nov. 9. Prior to dropping both matches, SPU had been on a six game win streak.
 
In the first meeting, the Falcons defeated the Yellowjackets 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-18, 25-16) in Billings, Mont., on Oct. 19.

As a team, SPU holds a combined .173 hitting percentage and allows opponents to hit .211 against them. The Falcons are fifth in the league in kills with 1152 (12.26/set) and fifth in blocks 180.0 (1.91/set).
 
SPU has two players that MSUB will have to key in on when the Falcons are on the attack.  Maddie Batiste leads the Falcon hitters and is second in the GNAC with 338 kills (3.60/set). Gabby Oddo has 323 kills (3.44/set) and is fourth in the league. After those two main contributors, Gabi Stegmoller has 139 kills (1.78/set).
 
Lindsey Lambert has 764 assists (8.40/set) and Maddie Donohoe lead with team with 369 digs (3.97/set). In addition to their offensive involvement, Batiste and Oddo are active on defense. Batiste is second on the team with 310 digs (3.30/set and Oddo is third with 282 (3.00/set).
 
In the first match-up between the two teams, Monck was the lone player with double digit kills and finished with her ninth double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs. Hashbarger had 34 assists and eight digs. Reed and Vigil each finished with nine kills. Vigil also contributed 12 digs. Freshman Hannah Hayden held a team high hitting percentage of .667.
 
"I am excited to get another shot at SPU, commented head coach Casey Williams. "I don't think they saw the best from us when we played them a couple of weeks ago and the team wants redemption. SPU is a really pin heavy team that we will need to slow down as quickly as possible. We are looking to get a lot of production out of our middles on both Thursday and Saturday."

The Saints are currently on a 31 game losing streak with their last victory coming against NNU Oct. 27 of 2018.
 
Mackenzie Carter is the lone Saint over the 200 kill mark with 225 (3.36/set) on the year. Kylie Coon has 134 kills (2.53/set and Gracie Brenner has 101 (2.15/set).
 
Aylssa Bartlett has 535 assists (6.69/set) while Kylie Alos leads the Saints back line with 366 digs (4.82/set).
 
SMU is the last conference foe the Yellowjackets defeated on Oct. 17 in Billings. MSUB won 3-0 (25-11, 28-15, 26-24). 
 
Hasbarger (21 assists) distributed the ball all over the court, as seven different player registered kills for MSUB. Reed and Mahowald both swatted eight kills to pace MSUB. Vigil finished with seven kills, Monck five, Taylor four, Hasbarger two and Hayden chipped in one.
 
Taylor led all players with seven block assist while holding a hitting percentage of .182. Logozzo led all players with 14 digs, followed by Monck who produced 12. Hailey Carroll, Monck and Vigil each had two service aces on the night.
 
"SMU is a scrappy team and they are looking for their first win this season," continued Williams "We need to make sure we don't underestimate them and come in on Saturday ready to play."
