ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Montana State University Billings' volleyball team had a tough second day of the Seawolf Spike with a pair of three-set setbacks to San Francisco State and No. 24 Sonoma State Saturday.
In the first match of the day, San Francisco State (5-3) finished with a .327 hitting percentage compared to MSUB's .171. SFSU had a trio of players finish with double-digit kills led by Megan Wright's 11. Jaclyn Clark and Kelly Ostello both had 10. Wright hit .429 in the match. Jacquie Brice finished with a match-high 41 assists, and Jessica Nicerio had 14 digs and four service aces.
San Francisco State controlled a first set that had no ties or lead changes. The Gators had a .325 hitting percentage in the opening set, while holding MSU Billings to -.027. SFSU eased to the 25-10 win. The Yellowjackets bounced back in the second frame. The set featured 12 ties and three lead changes, before the Gators pulled out the 25-21 victory. San Francisco State edged Montana State Billings in the third set, 25-22.
Chelsey Walter and
Monica Grimsrud combined for 21 terminations for MSUB.
Kyndal Williams dished out 29 assists. Defensively,
Sydney Oberstein finished with 12 of the Yellowjackets' 42 digs.
Montana State Billings ran into a determined team against No. 24 Sonoma State. The Seawolves (7-1) completed an undefeated run through its own tournament, including an upset over previously undefeated No. 12 Western Washington. SSU finished the win over MSUB with a .340 hitting percentage.
The Seawolves were led by tournament MVP, Madelyn Densberger, who finished with 11 kills and a match-high .429 hitting percentage. Kelsey Hull had a team-high 13 kills, while Caylie Seitz had 11. Hayley Ross had a match-high 28 assists and Devin Shaver added 15. Nicole Gragnola finished with a match-high 14 digs.
Grimsrud finished the tournament with 63 kills, 14 coming against Sonoma State. She had the second most terminations in the tournament. Williams had 24 assists, and finished fourth in the tournament with 135. Oberstein finished with 11 digs.
Montana State Billings (2-6) returns to the court for ithe opening of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday at Alaska. The match begins at 7 p.m. Alaskan Time, with live video and stats on MSUBSports.com.
