Mullowney played football for four years for the Yellowjackets from 1958-1962. In 1960 and 1961, he was selected the outstanding back as he led the conference in scoring both years. In 1961, Mullowney was elected the team captain and also earned the distinction of being named the team's Outstanding Player of the Year. He earned second team all-Frontier Conference honors in 1960 and first team all-conference honors in 1961. He ranks second all-time in school history in points (149), second in kickoff returns (58) and first in kickoff yards (1536). He ranks fifth in touchdowns (22), sixth in PAT’s (17) and 10th in rushing carries (284).
 
He also competed in track and field from 1960-1962, earning three letters, and coached the Yellowjacket track and field and cross country teams from 1965-1981. As an athlete, Mullowney was elected the team captain and also qualified for the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) District Championships in three events in two successive years. During his illustrious coaching career, he coached 11 NAIA men’s qualifiers, 70 Frontier Conference men’s champions, three NAIA women’s qualifiers, five AIWA (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) qualifiers and coached 27 Frontier Conference women’s champions. He was selected the coach of the year eight times and served on the NAIA Track and Field Games Committee for four years, serving as the Chairman for two. Under Mullowney, the cross country team went undefeated in the league's cross country meet for 15 straight years.
