Feature Story: Winslow Hired as Senior Coach (By: Ed West/Billings Gazette, 5/7/2001) - Original Publication
Former Montana State Billings basketball standout Amy Winslow has been hired as the new Billings Senior girls basketball coach and she can't wait to get started.
"I'm excited more than anything else," said the 1999 MSUB graduate, whose first order of business is meeting the players and planning a summer program.
"I want to build relationships with the kids. I'll meet with them this week and get the summer organized."
Winslow replaces Larry Tocci, who resigned last month.
For the past two years, Winslow has been a math teacher at Senior and will continue in that capacity. She served as the sophomore girls coach at Skyview and as freshman B coach for the boys at Senior last year.
Winslow, a 5-foot-3 guard, had her number retired by MSUB in 2000 after a stellar four-year career. She started 117 straight games and finished as the school's career leader in 3-point field goals, steals and assists.
In her four years, the Yellowjackets played in the NCAA tournament each season and advanced to the Elite Eight in '99.
Winslow played in high school at Troy and was a member of back-to-back Class B championships in basketball and volleyball.
She wanted to be a coach because, "I love basketball and I like to be around the players."
Her career has been influenced by her previous coaches, Frank McCarthy and Brian Orr at MSUB and Dennis Latimer at Troy. Winslow said she learned a lot in P.J. Eubanks' program at Skyview and Pat O'Connor's at Senior.
"I've been fortunate to have played for those coaches. It was a good experience to be under coach O'Connor, who has those years of experience and P.J. has a good program," she said.
Winslow is the first female head coach in Senior girls history, but isn't attaching too much significance to that.
"I just look at it as being a coach," she said.
