2 enter GNAC all-time list as 3 MSUB school records fall

SPEARFISH, S.D. – At two different meets, members of the MSUB track and field team competed to two Great Northwest Athletic Conference top-10 results and three topped Yellowjacket school records at the Dave Little Alumni Mile hosted by Black Hills State and the Air Force Academy Invitational in Colorado.

Freshman Chuck Carr broke a 45-year MSUB school record, entered the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time list at No. 10, and achieved an NCAA provisional mark with a height of 6-08.00 in the high jump at the Dave Little Alumni Mile. The native of Bozeman, Mont., eclipsed a mark of 6-06.00 set by Mark Halland in 1972. Fellow freshman Isaiah Girard matched Halland's mark at the meet with a final height of 6-06.00.

"It was a great day for our high jumpers," MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. "They have been working really hard every week and to achieve that today this early in the year is a great accomplishment. Everyone competed really well this weekend. We are excited to have this next week off from competition so we can continue to improve as we get closer to the GNAC Championships."

Also, entering the GNAC's all-time list is MSUB sprinter Sam Zook, who along with Austin Lindquist, and Nels Flanagan travelled to the Air Force Academy Invitational in Colorado to compete against DI and DII participants.

After lowering his own MSUB 60 meter record last week, Zook powered through the prelim's and semi-finals at the Air Force meet, advancing to the finals on a blistering 6.90 for a six-place result and the eighth fastest time in GNAC history.  Zook, a junior from Casper, Wyo., ran a steady time through the rounds to improve his speed, and move into second-place in the conference.

Freshman Michaela Johnson achieved the third MSUB school record as the graduate of Billings West ran a 9.15 during the final round of the women's 60 meter hurdles. Johnson improved her time of 9.36 in the prelim's to win the event by dropping .21 seconds and besting the MSUB 2015 time of 9.31 set by Hope Reid.

Competing with Zook at the meet in Colorado, Lindquist placed sixth for the Yellowjackets in the long jump with a mark of 21-10.25. Flanagan placed ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 52-02.75 and 11th in the shot put at 41-08.75.

Also with a win at Black Hills, Josey Smiedala took first place in the women's 400 meters in 1:01.60 which is the 11th best time in the GNAC this season. Smiedala was also fifth in the women's 200 meters in 27.89.

Three Yellowjackets competed to runner-up results. Garrett Love was second in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:58.87. In the men's 60 meters, Kaelen Shay tied for second at 7.18 and Braden Rykal was sixth in 7.32. Shay improved his time and moved-up two spots from the preliminary round to the finals.

In the women's long jump, freshman Brenna Beckett was second with a leap of 15-06.26 and Shaniah Schwend in third at 15-02.25. Halie Warren was fourth at 15-02.00. Beckett was also second in the women's triple jump at 34-04.00 with Schwend fourth at 33-05.75.

Jamie Orme placed second in the women's high jump at 5-00.50. Warren finished fifth at a height of 4-10.50.

Other top-5 results for MSUB included freshman Taylor Stringari in the women's shot put with a throw of 35-01.75. Hailey Steinbeisser was fifth at 34-07.50 and also placed fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 41-10.75.

Nate Vanderby cracked the top-5 with a third place finish in the men's 400 meters in 53.42. Freshman Marcus Lindquist was fourth in the men's long jump at 20-03.50 and fifth in the triple jump at 41-08.50. In the men's shot put, Brady Ostermiller placed fifth at 45-04.50.

Caitlin Sexton was fifth in the women's 60 meters in 8.62 and Orme sixth at 8.71. In the women's distance events, senior Rio Frame finished fifth in the 3,000 meters in 11:36.91
