PUEBLO, Colo. – Facing a tough opponent in the opening round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, the Montana State University Billings women's tennis team fell to Metro State University Friday morning at Pueblo City Park.
Â
After sweeping the doubles matches, CSU-Pueblo needed just one singles win to clinch the match victory as play is halted as soon as one team clinches the win.
Â
"We had some great momentum in doubles but just couldn't close out the matches," commented MSUB head coach
Becky King. "Metro only needed one win in singles to end the match so it was a lot of pressure on the women going into singles play."
Â
Playing at No. 2 doubles,
Ricquel Ramsbottom and
Hannah Shephard had a strong showing for the Yellowjackets, but Ana-Jelena Vujosevic and RMAC Freshman of the Year Courtney Wright defeated the duo 8-6.
Â
At No. 1 singles, Haleigh Chobanian and Kasey Love teamed up for Metro State to defeat MSUB's
Emily Paffhausen and
Mary Conwell.
Â
In singles action, Love's 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shephard in the No. 2 position clinched the match for Metro State, which will advance to the next round to face No. 1 seed Western New Mexico later this afternoon.
Â
The Yellowjackets were scheduled to play a consolation match against Colorado Christian, which was canceled due to an impending thunderstorm.
