Colorado Mesa rolls to 8-1 win over MSUB women

BILLINGS, Mont. – Remaining undefeated on the season in doubles play were Emily Paffhausen and Mary Conwell, but their 8-3 victory was the lone point for the Montana State University Billings women's tennis team in an 8-1 loss to visiting Colorado Mesa University Saturday morning in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match at the Elks Tennis Center.
 
Paffhausen and Conwell are now 5-0 as a team in doubles play, defeating CMU's Michelle Phillips and Katie Metz 8-3 to help the Yellowjackets to a point.
 
"Mary and Emily were the standout performers as they had a solid doubles win," commented MSUB head coach Becky King. "Those two played solid together, getting us our only win on the day."
 
At No. 1 doubles, Emily Dodson and Amy Beeston of CMU fought off Morgan Opp and Jade Goodyear-Anderson for a 9-7 victory. In the No. 3 doubles position, Natalie Martin and Katie Kirby picked up an 8-2 victory over Hannah Shephard and Ricquel Ramsbottom.
 
Opp carried her strong play over into singles action, battling tough against Martin. CMU's top player emerged with the win however, picking up a 6-3, 7-5 victory. "Morgan put up a great fight in singles," King said. "She had great points and moved the ball very well."
 
At No. 2 singles, Rachel McLaughlin defeated Shephard in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, and Dodson also had a shutout singles win over Goodyear-Anderson at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Mary Conwell put up a fight at No. 5 singles, but Beeston held on for a 6-2, 6-2 win, while Phillps bested Paffhausen at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-2.
 
Playing at No. 3 singles, Ramsbottom fell to Kirby 6-3, 6-0.
 
The loss dropped MSUB's record to 3-9 on the season, and the 'Jackets finished RMAC play with a 2-3 record. Colorado Mesa improved to 13-8 with the win and the Mavericks are 3-1 in conference play.
 
Opp was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Match for MSUB.
