MSUB SPORTS – Ten more years of Yellowjacket women's soccer are in the books, and the 2010s were a decade filled with program firsts, memorable moments, and some of the best players in school history.

"It is awesome to take time to reflect on players who have helped build our program to what we have today," said head coach Stephen Cavallo, who enters his fourth season in charge of the program in the fall of 2020. "MSUB's women's soccer team has seen a lot of success in the past decade, and it is awesome to see a culmination of the elites making it into this team. This group deserves to be recognized for what they've done for MSUB women's soccer and the Billings community in general."

The Starting Lineup
In goal, the all-decade team features Danielle Gordon who played every minute of the 2011 season. MSUB had its best record of the decade that year at 11-3-2, and the defensive unit's 12 goals allowed and 0.63 goals-against average were both the lowest marks of the decade.

all-decadewsocgoalkeeper

The center-back duo of Jennifer Larsen and Kari Kastelic provides the all-decade unit with a core of strength and a pair of players who captained some of the most successful defenses of the decade. Larsen was not only stellar defensively in her four-year starting career, but ranks in the top-10 in school history in scoring as she contributed on both sides of the ball. Kastelic played every single minute of her three-year career with the 'Jackets, a feat unmatched by any other player during the decade.

"Playing soccer was – and still is – my passion, and I am so fortunate I was able to play so many minutes and gain that experience playing the game I love. In 2010, I was moved from a forward to a center back and helped our team to our best goals-against average. Although I missed being at the front line of the attack, I was content in knowing that I could help our team in another way. It still allowed me to do what I loved best – scoring off of corner kicks." – Jennifer Larsen on her greatest individual athletic moments.

"No matter what, we always worked hard despite whatever obstacles were thrown at us. We had our ups and downs throughout every season, and we were always there to support one another and pick each other up. I always admired the new players who came in every year and showed how bad they wanted to be there, as well as the returners who helped motivate and set a good example for the new players." – Kari Kastelic.

Whitney Siler patrols the left flank and Jennifer Johnson is on the right, completing the all-decade back line. Siler was an integral part of MSUB's regional run in 2010, starting 15 of 20 matches and earning all-region honors. Johnson helped MSUB go 11-4-2 in 2014 and finish second in the GNAC standings while starting all 17 matches at the outside back position.

wsocmidfielders

MSUB's most recent player in the Starting XI slots in directly in front of the back line, in 2020 graduate Alexa Iacolucci. The holding midfielder enjoyed a four-year starting career, and produced the most offense among any of the all-decade midfielders with 11 goals and nine assists.

Chelsea Shuman captained MSUB's 2014 squad that reached the conference tournament, and was a three-time all-conference selection during her tenure from 2011-2014. On the opposite wing is Dana Lubieniecki, another four-year starter and eventual captain for the 'Jackets. Lubieniecki twice earned all-conference, and also contributed eight goals and six assists.

Playing the center attacking midfield role is Katlyn Lokay, who was a four-year star from 2012-2015. Lokay started all 70 matches during her career, and her 6,418 minutes played are second most in program history. She was a first-team all-GNAC pick during her senior campaign, and she helped MSUB advance to the conference tournament in three of her four seasons.

Up top are two of the best strikers in the history of the Yellowjacket women's soccer program, in Jaucelyn Richter and Heidi Greenback. Richter captains the all-decade unit, earning Player of the Decade honors by virtue of her 28 goals and 24 assists throughout her four seasons. Her scoring total ranks her No. 2 in MSUB history and No. 17 in GNAC history, as she was the offensive cog on the team's regional run in 2010.

"My fondest memories about my time at MSUB are centered around the people I met along the way. I was granted the opportunity to play a high level of soccer in a community that I grew up in, I received a quality education, and I made lifelong friendships that I will forever cherish." – Jaucelyn Richter.

Greenback was equally effective playing alongside Richter for three seasons, as she is No. 4 in MSUB history with 72 points including 29 goals and 14 assists. Greenback was a two-time all-region and three-time all-conference selection as a forward.

The Reserves
The all-decade bench features two players at each field position and one goalkeeper. Recent graduate and two-time first-team Academic All-American Amanda Hemmen enjoyed a stellar four-year career as the team's center back from 2016-2019. Hemmen was a three-year captain, and earned all-conference three times. Another center back is featured on the bench, in former captain Haley McFarlane (2012-2014). After a season-ending knee injury in 2013, McFarlane returned to earn all-region honors after helping MSUB concede just 12 goals in 17 games during the 2014 campaign.

"I didn't really have any individual moments as an athlete, because all the fun stuff I did as a center back relied on my teammates. Beating Central Washington at home during my senior year was a great moment. We were losing 1-0, and with five seconds left in the first half Emily Gaines scored a goal to tie the game. Alexa Iacolucci scored the winning goal in the second half, and we beat Central Washington for the first time during my time at MSUB. This is my most memorable moment because for years I had watched my teammates battle through so many losses. I knew just how hard it was to push past these, and for so long I tried to lead them in believing that the never-give-up mentality would eventually pay off. In that moment, I knew it had." – Amanda Hemmen.

The midfield unit features another recent graduate in Claire Tevaseu, who was an all-conference pick and three-time academic all-GNAC selection during her career from 2016-2019. Tevaseu's top season was in 2018, when she scored twice and provided four assists out of the midfield unit.

amandahemmen
Amanda Hemmen was a four-year starter and three-year captain on the back line for the 'Jackets from 2016-2019.

Kristen Kastelic – Kari's older sister – was a key piece of the team's midfield during the early years of the decade. Playing from 2009-2012, Kastelic was part of the key group that made the first regional tournament and was a two-time all-conference player.

Forwards Jessica Spang and Alisa Sagdahl are the first off the bench on the offensive unit. A hometown player who enjoyed a steady four-year career, Spang totaled 29 points including 10 goals from 2014-2017. Sagdahl was a key fixture in the offense for three seasons, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 points from 2012-2014 and earning first-team all-GNAC honors.

Krystal Daniels, whose career goals-against average of 0.63 is tied with Gordon for first in the MSUB record books, is the reserve goalkeeper after completing her college career with two years at MSUB. Daniels was the team's shot stopper during a 2014 playoff season, in which the team allowed just 12 goals in 17 matches.

Top Seasons
The Yellowjackets started the 2010s with a bang, qualifying for the program's first NCAA regional tournament after going 13-6-1 in 2010. The 'Jackets went 9-5 in league play that fall, and defeated Cal State Los Angeles 1-0 in the regional opener for the program's first NCAA victory.

"We did things the right way there," said Don Trentham, who coached the MSUB program from 2002-2010. "A lot of hard work went into that first tournament appearance and the first tournament win. A lot of players laid a lot of groundwork there, and I am very fortunate to have worked with a lot of players during the previous decade to set up our success in 2010."

"I will always remember sitting in the conference room in the health building, watching with anticipation to see if we were selected to go to the tournament. When our name was announced the room went NUTS and we couldn't contain our excitement. We found out we were playing Cal State LA (the higher seed) and we were not expected to win, but we did. Being a part of that team in 2010 was amazing and will always have a special place in my heart." – Jennifer Larsen.

"Being the underdogs beating Cal State LA in the first round of the NCAA tournament in the pouring Seattle rain. I can still picture Amanda Brusic's amazing goal to the top right corner and Carly Valentine coming back in with a broken nose to finish the game!" – Kristen Kastelic on her favorite MSUB memories.

The 'Jackets celebrate after beating Cal State Los Angeles 1-0 in the NCAA regional tournament on November 11, 2010.

MSUB's 2011 team had the top winning percentage of the decade, going 11-3-4 and allowing a decade-low 12 goals along the way. That combined with the team's highest scoring average of the decade – at 1.94 goals per game which ranked second in the GNAC – resulted in another near-regional appearance.

MSUB qualified for the first-ever GNAC tournament in 2012, going 13-6-1 overall and reaching the tournament title game after beating Seattle Pacific 1-0 in the opening round. MSUB went 8-5-1 in league play that year, finishing third in the conference standings.

"Senior year overall was one of my favorites! So many fun memories as a team and as a senior class. I'm proud of our undefeated 9-0 streak at the start of the season." – Kristen Kastelic.

The 'Jackets matched their top conference finish of the decade in 2014, going 11-4-2 overall and 9-3-2 in league play to claim the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament. The 2014 team matched the 2011 squad for the fewest goals allowed, conceding just 12 on the season.

Academic Success
One of the women's soccer program's points of pride over the decade was its academic success, as year-in and year-out the team was one of the top performers in the conference, region, and country. MSUB totaled 93 academic all-conference selections, 15 academic all-district picks, and five Academic All-Americans throughout the decade. The team won the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award each season, reserved for teams maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

"We have to remind ourselves as coaches that it's not a guarantee that our players will be as good in the classroom as they have been, and sometimes we don't give them as much credit as they deserve for how well they do academically. The consistency of our team's academic excellence is remarkable. For our players to excel in the classroom every single year is a testament to the hard work that they put in." – Stephen Cavallo.

The women's soccer program also twice won the GNAC Team Academic Award, for its performance in 2011-12 and 2018-19. The 2018-19 team further stood out, as it posted a 3.74 team GPA which was the highest number out of any of the 122 athletic teams in the conference that year.

wsochuddle

Last fall, the program had 15 academic all-GNAC selections, marking the most of any year during the decade. It was also the fifth time during the 2010s that MSUB reached double digits in academic all-conference selections.

Samantha Boehm earned the first Academic All-America nod in 2010, and Richter and Larsen followed by each earning the honor in 2012. Most recently, Hemmen was a first-team Academic All-American in back-to-back years from 2018-2019, after completing her stellar career with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in biology.

"I am proud of myself for making it through all four years as a collegiate athlete while maintaining a strong GPA. I worked hard and always gave it my all on and off the field. I am very proud of the team that made history going to the NCAA tournament! I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of a team and program with wonderful leaders, coaching staff, and the chance to have played alongside some of the most talented soccer players in MSUB history." – Kristen Kastelic.

"The MSUB women's soccer team really strove to do our best each day we showed up to the field, and we brought that same mindset to the classroom. This team is a group of talented, hardworking girls who value the importance of giving back to the community." – Claire Tevaseu.

Inspirational Progression
A continuing theme throughout the decade within the program is one of individual growth among players into leadership positions. Perhaps the most outstanding example of this lies within 2018 graduate Jordan Devoto, who played just 15 minutes as a true freshman in 2015 before captaining the 'Jackets in her final season. Devoto wound up making a significant impact on the field as a forward, but even more so through the example she set of leadership through hard work and personal growth. Many of the players on the all-decade team share this sentiment of significant personal growth throughout their careers.

"I am most proud to have grown as a person through soccer. From the beginning of my career to the end, it is amazing how much I changed and how much of that is credited to my coaches, teammates, mentors, family, and staff." – Jaucelyn Richter.

Jennifer Larsen (17), Jaucelyn Richter (19), and Janae Remsberg (20) line up pregame in 2012.

"My senior year gave me the opportunity to really step up as a leader. I grew into who I wanted to be as a teammate, friend, and person. I received the honor of being a captain and was awarded the Quest For Excellence award. This award is voted upon by the team, 'in honor of her commitment to MSUB and for always going above and beyond with her hard work, discipline, dedication, passion, and teamwork.' Starting out as an insecure, quiet freshman and growing into someone who encompasses all of these qualities is something I am most proud of." – Alexa Iacolucci.

"Looking back I am proud of the individual growth I made. Coming in my freshman year, I was timid and unsure of what to expect, yet I ended my career as a captain on the team and the lone senior." – Jessica Spang.

spangsenior
Four-year starter Jessica Spang walks out with her family on Senior Day in 2017.

"I am most proud of how much I grew athletically during the four years I was there. I came in as a freshman from a small town that never had to fight for a position. It didn't take a lot to be the best from where I grew up. But transitioning to a collegiate program, I had to adapt and chase after every moment I got on the field. I fought for every moment I earned, and I take a lot of pride in the athlete I became on that field." – Jennifer Johnson.

"Playing college soccer for four years at a wonderful institution in a competitive conference was what I am most proud of in my athletic career. My high school athletic career felt like a never-ending road of obstacles. I broke my collar bone three times, endured two stress fractures, and tore my ACL and meniscus. Naturally, I had doubts that I would ever be healthy enough for a college to recruit me, let alone play. But, thankfully, I was wrong. During college I played through four years of lingering pain from the knee surgery I had during high school. Because of this, every single day that I got to play soccer was a gift, a gift I was determined to make the most of." – Amanda Hemmen.

Yellowjacket Family
MSUB's culture has long been rooted in a family atmosphere within the women's soccer program, both literally and figuratively. The Kastelic sisters were the first example of this during the decade, with Kristen helping to bring one of the best defenders of the decade in her sister Kari to the program after her own stellar four-year career. The Greenbacks were another sister duo during the decade, with Heidi being a star forward from 2010-2013 and her sister Brittney playing in the midfield for three seasons after that.

"It's pretty cool to have the opportunity to play on a team with a diverse group of individuals/personalities coming from all over the United States (and Canada). There's just something special about a group of people who started as strangers, coming together to work hard toward a common goal. Then there's that cloud nine feeling after giving everything you have on the field as a team and winning a close game. It is one of the best feelings in the world and unfortunately it's a feeling you can't really "recreate" outside of competitive sports in the "real world." Through the ups and downs of wins and losses, I'm lucky that I had the opportunity to become friends with so many amazing teammates and many other student-athletes from all over the world at MSUB. I look back on my memories as one of the best four years of my life and I feel grateful to have come out of the experience with so many lifelong friends." – Kristen Kastelic.

"My teammates weren't just teammates – they were even more than friends. Those four years, we were a family. We went through bad times, good times, wins, losses, countless fitness tests at 6 a.m., three-hour meetings, and lots of laughs. I wouldn't trade it for anything." – Jennifer Larsen.

"The camaraderie and commitment of the team was what set us apart from the rest. We spent nearly every day together, yet after one day off I remember everyone saying how they felt like it had been forever and catching up as if we had been apart for months. We spent every day pushing each other to be the best." – Alexa Iacolucci.

"The best part about being on the MSUB women's soccer team was being on a team of strong females working towards the same goal. No matter what the circumstances, during the good and bad days, I knew that every girl had my back and was going to do what it takes for the team to succeed. The way our team banded together through adversity, despite various backgrounds, was remarkable and a joy to be a part of." – Chelsea Shuman.

"My fondest memories at MSUB were team dinners during preseason. We would go to dinners provided by really wonderful people throughout the community and just have fun together as a team after a long and usually hot day of working hard and keeping it locked in as we prepped for the season." – Katlyn Lokay.

"We were a group of girls from many different place and many different backgrounds, yet we came together and became a family. We always had so much fun together. Whether we were on the pitch, on an airplane, in the library, or hanging out at one of our houses, it never failed that we would be laughing to the point of tears." – Jaucelyn Richter.

"Each team was different and each season brought new accomplishments. In 2013 I had the personal perk of getting to play alongside my sister for a season." – Heidi Greenback.

"MSUB allowed me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people. I cherish all the relationships and friendships I created with my teammates." – Jessica Spang.

"My fondest memories during my time at MSUB have everything to do with the women's soccer team for the whole four years I was there. Every team dinner, road trip, sunrise practice, sweat session, cry session, fits of laughter, that happened with my team are ones that I hold closest to my heart." – Jennifer Johnson.

Set Up For Success
The all-decade players also took time to reflect on what the MSUB experience meant to them, and shared how it has significantly shaped their lives both professionally and personally.

"For one, the love of the game has kept me involved as I have helped out with Skyview (High School) soccer the last two years. Being a student-athlete has also helped me with time management and being able to handle multiple responsibilities at once." – Jessica Spang.

"My time at MSUB taught me not to settle. I learned how to adapt to my surroundings but also achieve my big dreams. It taught me how to dig deep and not be afraid of a hard pursuit." – Jennifer Johnson.

"Attending MSUB allowed me to get out of state and get outside my comfort zone, on top of being able to play for a great team. We always had a great time and it helped me decide that I wanted to go into something with athletics for my career. The teachers I had for my HHP classes were great and I still keep in touch with some of them. Some of my best memories come from Montana and I like going back when I can to play in the Rocky Indoor tournament, the alumni games, and just to explore more of Montana." – Jennifer Larsen.

"I am so incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to be a student-athlete at MSUB. My time as a student-athlete taught me the value of hard work, teamwork, determination, discipline, time management, and resilience – qualities that I've continued to carry throughout my life and into my career. You go through several ups and downs throughout a college season as you do in life and you have to be mentally tough, willing to learn, and persevere to achieve success." – Kari Kastelic.

"My experience being a student-athlete taught me hard work and dedication. Even on the bad days I learned to always show up and put your best foot forward." – Chelsea Shuman.

"My experience at MSUB shaped who I am as a person and set me up for success in my life and my career. Being a student-athlete isn't easy. It is a full time physically and mentally demanding job while balancing your academics and personal life. It takes discipline, commitment and heart. I truly believe being a student-athlete is not only an incredible feat to be proud of, but the experience teaches you so many invaluable life skills and lessons. Having a strong work ethic, a good attitude, and the ability to be coachable and a team player are priceless qualities, and they are characteristics I look for in individuals when hiring for a position. You learn life isn't always fair, and winning is never guaranteed even when you may be the one working harder. When it's all said and done you don't look back and remember the mistakes, losses, or records; you remember the overall experience and the journey. I am proud to be an alum and love staying connected to the school, the women's soccer team, and MSUB Athletics. The experience brought me lifelong friends and memories to last a lifetime." – Kristen Kastelic.

"My MSUB experience has provided me with a degree to pursue my desired career and has taught me many necessary skills and qualities that serve me in the real world. Time management, patience, dedication, integrity, hard work, accountability, empathy, commitment, teamwork, compassion, independence, punctuality, and confidence are just some of the important skills that I have carried on from my time at MSUB." – Alexa Iacolucci.

Alexa Iacolucci progressed her way to team captain by her senior season in 2019.

"My experience at MSUB taught me perseverance and teamwork. It taught me how to cope with losing/hard times, how to win humbly, and how to keep pursuing a goal/dream no matter what adversity I may stumble upon. Our program instilled a level of discipline into me that I carried into my civilian and military career." – Jaucelyn Richter.

"My experience at MSUB really taught me about hard work and working for the things you love." – Whitney Siler.

"My MSUB experience has prepared me for dealing with adversity. Even when things don't go as you originally planned, MSUB has taught me to roll with the punches. Also, my time working at Yellowstone Public Radio during my junior and senior years helped me discover my passion for marketing, and specifically digital marketing." – Claire Tevaseu.

"MSUB has shaped my life in that I learned a great deal about being independent and my degree allows me to pursue a career I really enjoy. Throughout my four years I had to work for the things I really wanted to accomplish and that carries over into my life now both at work and in overall life. Especially throughout my career as an athlete, I learned that I could work through anything. You have good days and bad days and sometimes you just gotta put your head down and grind it out for a week or a month or however long. I had coaches who always pushed me to be better not only athletically but also as a leader and person, and I learned a lot from them. So I guess MSUB has shaped my life in a lot of ways regarding work and who I am as a person." – Katlyn Lokay.

Trust, Commitment, Care Building Into The 2020s
"Having Stephen Cavallo as my head soccer coach ignited my growth as an individual during my time at Montana State University Billings. During my sophomore year, his first year as head coach, he gave the team the freedom and the voice to decide three core values we wanted to found the program in. These three values were trust, commitment, and care. I carried these with me the next three years, but I also plan to carry them with me the rest of my life. On my application to medical school I told the admissions committees, 'When I become a physician, I will establish trust with my patients to consistently make them feel cared for and secure inside the walls of my office. I am committed to inspiring individuals as they persevere through not only medical challenges, but challenges of life.' There is so much that Stephen taught me about being a leader and a teammate, but it all boils down to the fact that Stephen Cavallo did more than just coach soccer, he coached us in life. For that, I am forever thankful." – Amanda Hemmen.

Momentum is headed in the right direction for the women's soccer program, which is coming off its best season in four years in 2019 after going 6-9-2 overall. After a senior class featuring the likes of Iacolucci, Hemmen, and Tevaseu graduated, the 'Jackets will look to the next generation of stars to kick off the 2020s in positive fashion.

"When I reflect on each year I have been here, it becomes more and more clear to me how much of an impact our program can make on the Billings community and youth soccer. We start the decade with 13 freshmen, who will hopefully embody the quality that is in this all-decade team. We are really excited to see what direction we go in." – Stephen Cavallo.

"I just want to encourage the current team to occasionally slow down, take a step back, and really appreciate being in the moment with all the amazing people and adventures because it goes by faster than you think. And for those I've played with, thank you so much for being a part of all these incredible memories I cherish. Also, thank you Stephen for always believing in me." – Alexa Iacolucci.

"I am so thankful I had the opportunity to play at MSUB. I would like to thank MSUB and the women's soccer program for a great four years." – Jessica Spang.

"I'd say I hit the jackpot playing for MSUB." – Jaucelyn Richter.

"If I could repeat it all I would do it in a heartbeat!" – Kristen Kastelic.
