Yellowjacket Baseball All-Decade Team

11/13/2020 4:05:00 PM

MSUB SPORTS – One of the athletic department's most successful programs during the 2010s, the Yellowjacket baseball team won all four of its championships during the decade during the final five years.

Experiencing unprecedented success during that span, the 'Jackets advanced to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in each of the last five years, and won their first conference title in 2019 to claim a spot in their first-ever NCAA regional championship tournament.

"To be remembered as a student-athlete on an all-decade team is an awesome honor," said current Yellowjacket baseball head coach Derek Waddoups. "When you look at the list of accomplishments by the teams the past 10 seasons, there have been so many contributors. It is an outstanding personal achievement for the dudes that have made this team, and they will go down as some of the greats in Yellowjacket history."

"My favorite memories of my time with MSUB baseball definitely was the daily interactions with our players. Being in the trenches with them and being a part of their development on and off the field. We had so many high character guys that cared about each other and the Yellowjackets. Finally getting over that hurdle and winning our first championship was such a great culmination of the determination and hard work of our players and staff. Dogpiles are always fun but as I get deeper into my coaching career I appreciate the striving for championships as much as the actual championship." – Rob Bishop, MSUB head coach 2011-2016, 2015 GNAC Coach of the Year.

"Incredible group of players on this list for the all-decade team. What an honor to be included for these guys. I know as coaches we are all proud that we were able to be a part of the careers in a Yellowjacket uniform." – Aaron Sutton, MSUB head coach 2017-2019, 2018 & 2019 GNAC Coach of the Year.

The Starters
MSUB's starting pitching rotation is anchored by arguably the top for throwers to ever play for the 'Jackets. Brady Muller established a new standard of excellence for MSUB pitchers over the early years in the decade, and aced the staff that won the program's first title in 2015. Tanner Johnson was another key starter on both that and the 2016 championship teams, while then-underclassman Cody Cooper gained experience early in his career. Cooper eventually broke Muller's all-time strikeout record, with an unprecedented 106 punch outs during a memorable 2016 season. Steen Fredrickson, the only player in MSUB history to earn the GNAC Pitcher of the Year award, rounds out the starting rotation of four arms.
"The Jackets were always the definition of what you want a team to be. We would all hold each other accountable while still having a great time together both on and off the field. Coach Bishop and Coach Sutton really drove that mentality home in my time as a 'Jacket. That's why we didn't just have great baseball teams, but we were always at the top of the conference academically as well." – Cody Cooper.
Adam Cox, who became the first player in MSUB history to be selected in the MLB player draft, earned his spot on the team as the top closer although he could likely fill a spot in the batting order as well. Perhaps the top two-way player in school history, Cox is MSUB's all-time saves leader while also ranking fourth in school history with a .337 batting average.

Player of the Decade Brody Miller, a two-time All-American and one of just two athletes in MSUB history to be named the GNAC Athlete of the Year, captains the infield unit of the squad. Miller was a two-time GNAC Player of the Year and holds virtually ever career offensive record at MSUB. Fellow All-Americans Kaleo Johnson, who joined Cox in being picked in the draft, and Daniel Cipriano, who joined Miller as a GNAC Player of the Year, are posted at the corner infield positions.

All-region selection Colby Robison earned the starting shortstop position, with his name appearing in the record books in places like batting average (.330, seventh) and the incredible single-game RBI record (nine). Five-year veteran Landon Peterson – the only one to see playing time on each of MSUB's four championship teams in the decade – gets the nod behind the plate after recording more putouts and runners caught stealing than any other 'Jacket. Ryan Myers, who played primarily at first base and is essentially interchangeable with Cipriano, also earned a starting spot as the designated hitter.

In the outfield, all-region centerfielder Luke Reinschmidt is flanked by Casey Merritt in left and all-region pick Jalen Garcia in right. Garcia spent the majority of his career in center field after the departure of Reinschmidt, but some of the top defensive moments from the Platinum Glove award winner came while he was in right field.

"My athletic career taught me valuable lessons to apply to everyday life such as work ethic, discipline, and perseverance. Most of all these I attribute to Coach Sutton and Coach Wright. They let me be me and developed me into the player I always wanted to be. A testament to this would be every season I would seem to have one weekend where I would struggle big time and I would always end up coming up to hit in a huge spot at the end of the series, and two years in a row I was probably 0-for-17 with around 10 strikeouts on the weekend and in that huge at bat coach would give me a 3-0 green light. I don't think I would have even given me the green light but it showed me his trust he had in me and I hit RBI doubles in both spots I believe and those hits like that couldn't feel better. It's the things like that I won't forget. I couldn't be more thankful for the college career I had and for the incredible teammates I had and coaches that lead us to the high levels of success we achieved." – Jalen Garcia

The Reserves
The talent level hardly drops when moving to the bench unit, where starting pitchers Bryon Baker, Jared Winslow, and Archie Smith are backed up by stellar two-year reliever Travis Vincent. Reliable receiver Andrew Schleusner, who is one of three all-decade selections currently on the roster, earned the second catching spot on the team.

"My MSUB experience taught me how to work hard and no matter how tough things get, to always remain positive no matter the circumstances and always push through. Shoutout to all the coaches and teammates I've had throughout the years at MSUB. Thanks for all the great memories, love you guys!" – Bryon Baker.

"Every team I played on was full of guys who only cared about team success. Everyone was willing to sacrifice and be in different roles if it was better for the team and that doesn't happen everywhere. That was one of the biggest reasons for our success, in my opinion." – Jared Winslow.

Corey Morris and Kyle Durbin, who teamed up on the left side of the infield during the back-to-back championship teams in 2015-16, represented two of the program's top defensive players during the decade. Shortstop Wyatt Setian and second baseman Conner Linebarger, who each helped bring home the 2018 and 2019 team titles round out the bench infielders.

"The two teams I played on had the same message, 'Shock the Nation.' We were picked to finish dead last my first year and we all knew we were a much better team than that. Every time we thought about taking it easy, the image of being picked last was in the front of all of our minds. What a fun team." – Kyle Durbin on the 2015 championship squad.

Jeff Ridgeway was the standout centerfielder during the turn of the decade, and is joined by left fielder Kade Hall and right fielder Matt Dillon. Both Hall and Dillon also spent time behind the plate during their Yellowjacket careers, before enjoying their most success in the outfield positions.

"I think just being able to contribute to the amazing year we had in 2018 and all the records we broke. Seeing myself grow from a freshman at a Junior College to the way I preformed my senior year makes me look back and feel accomplished knowing all that hard work paid off." – Kade Hall on what he's most proud of in his MSUB career.

"The common thread with all of these guys is their desire and ability to add value to our team and program. When I look at the talented players on this list I don't think about the baseball skills as much as the people that they were and how they made great teams. To me that is what college athletics is at its best. These guys are all great examples of what a Yellowjacket should be." – Rob Bishop.

Moment of the Decade

May 10, 2019 – MSUB 8, Saint Martin's 5 (at Portland, OR) – Box Score | Recap
MSUB won its first-ever conference tournament title, and clinched its first-ever trip to the NCAA regional playoffs. Dylan Barkley earned the win with six strong innings of work, Conner Linebarger finished up his tournament-MVP performance with three hits, and fifth-year seniors Jared Winslow and Landon Peterson were the battery when the final out was recorded in the most important game of the decade. It was the final MSUB victory for head coach Aaron Sutton, who went 89-67 (.571) in his three seasons in charge of the 'Jackets.

"The one hit shutout against Western Oregon, collecting two saves on senior day, and most of all being on the bottom of the dog pile after winning the conference tournament in 2019." – Jared Winslow on his top MSUB moments.

"I'm proud of joining MSUB a semester after Coach Sutton and Wright took over, and forming a mutual trust that we would turn things around. We not only proved that we were the best program in the conference, but one of the best in all of Division 2 baseball. A moment that sticks with me to this day is seeing MSUB play in a regional the year after I graduated, and even though I wasn't on that team, it was a great feeling to see them playing in San Diego against national powerhouses. To think back on when I showed up at MSUB, and then seeing the program play in a regional, it was a good feeling." – Ryan Myers.

"We preached leaving the place better than we found it and to see that group and the seniors involved be rewarded with achieving a goal we had set out to do since day one was very fulfilling for our coaching staff. The teams at MSUB could use any excuse in the book for why we came up short before, but it felt like the tougher the route or situation the more it fueled our fires. Now that the hurdle has been crossed I really believe that MSUB is in a great spot to be a perennial contender to compete regionally. To be a part of that first group is truly special and something we will never forget." – Aaron Sutton.

They also knew when the hammer had to be dropped and it was time to become serious. In my current role I try and emulate a lot of those same characteristics that they taught me. Those two great men took a chance on me and gave me every opportunity to be successful not only in baseball, but academically, and they paved the way for me to live a successful life. I could not be more thankful for the opportunity that MSUB gave me. Dozens of Yellowjackets earned academic all-conference honors during the 2010s, and Dillon stood out as an Academic All-American during the 2019 season.

MSUB also had three straight players post the highest overall GPA in the conference, with Drew Christina at a 4.0 in 2016, Winslow with a 3.91 in 2017, and Jarod Paul with a 4.0 in 2018.

"I've told Sutton and Wright plenty of times after I graduated that I would not be where I am in life had it not been for them and the MSUB program. I've shared with them that the success I've had in my current career has a lot to do with how tough, determined, and unwilling to settle I am thanks to my time and experiences at MSUB. I believe that I wouldn't be where I am now had it not been for MSUB. Sutton and Wright instilled toughness into all of us, and urged us to become better men on top of succeeding on the baseball field, and I am definitely a better man right now thanks to them." – Ryan Myers.

"My MSUB experience has helped shape the man I am today while giving me lifelong friends. MSUB has also given me the degree that got me a job supervising the production of the number 1 producer of potato products in North America, Lambweston." – Corey Morris.

"It will forever be a huge part of what made me into the man I am today, and I will always give that credit to being lucky enough to play for Coach Sutton for four years of my life. The way he runs a program and pushes you as an individual to always be better, be an upstanding young man on and off the field, and have confidence in everything you do in life. Couldn't be happier with how my baseball career went and all the crazy curves and turns it took lead me to MSUB." – Kade Hall.

"Coach Sutton and Coach Bishop instilled in me and all my teammates that nothing beats hard work. If you want something in life, don't be scared to work hard and always set the bar high for yourself. With that in mind, those same ideas have shaped my future career goals to be a physical therapist for a professional sports team. Being a Montana kid, it was a great honor to be able to represent my home state while at MSUB. I wouldn't have changed my time at MSUB for anything, with all the amazing people I met and memories we will all share." – Jared Winslow.

About the MSUB All-Decade Team Project
The top student-athletes from each of Montana State University Billings' current varsity athletic teams from 2010-2019 have been selected, and 14 all-decade teams will be revealed throughout the course of the fall of 2020. Each sport's all-decade team is comprised of the top-performing student-athletes, with weight given to individual athletic achievement and accolades, team achievement, academic achievement, as well as community service. For more information on MSUB's all-decade project, and to view each sport's all-decade teams, view the all-decade project webpage online here.
