Baseball Continues to Ride Momentum, Takes Two From Wildcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BILLINGS, Mont.
– The Montana State University Billings baseball team continued to roll with their new-found momentum Friday afternoon, sweeping their pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference games over the Wildcats of Central Washington, 11-10 and 4-2, at Dehler Park.

With the pair of wins, MSUB improves to an even 10-10 overall for the season and is now 3-5 in the conference while CWU falls to 9-13 overall and an even 5-5 in the GNAC.

MSUB has now won six games in a row which is the longest winning streak for the baseball program since the 2007 'Jackets won eight in a row.

"Our guys played hard all day, today," said head coach Rob Bishop. "Blake (Loran) stepped up with several big hits for us in the first game and (Brian) Hutchings just put us on his shoulders in the second game. It was a great performance by our whole team."

The first game proved to be quite the duel as neither team could establish the advantage and was not settled until the final inning when Blake Loran ripped a three-run walk-off home run to hand the one-run win to the 'Jackets. It was his first tater of the season.

MSUB struck first in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs, but CWU matched the two runs with two of their own in the next inning.

The two programs would go on from there to trade the lead back and forth over the next couple of innings before Central Washington ended up with a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning off three runs.

The Yellowjackets were able to get two back in the seventh inning, but gave up three more in the top of the ninth inning.

Still in the game and with their season-long winning streak on the line, the Yellowjackets stung last with four runs in the bottom of the ninth capped off by Loran's walk-off homer.

Zachary Smith (2-0) came in for one inning and that was all he needed to record the win after Brady Muller went the first five innings with nine strikeouts.

Kyle Cruzen was not credited with an inning of work since no outs were registered while he was toeing the rubber, but he suffered his second loss of the season.

The Yellowjackets raced out to an early 4-0 lead in the second game with two runs scored in the first and third innings each. One of the runs scored in third saw shortstop Colby Robison round the bases with his second home run of the season as he knocked the ball into the gap of right-centerfield and all the way up against the wall.

A plethora of errors plagued both sides in game-two as both teams committed three errors each, most early in the game.

Robison went 4-for-4 in the doubleheader's second game with two runs batted in and another scored. He ended the day with four runs scored and three RBIs for the day.

Brian Hutchings (2-2) pitched the complete game for MSUB on the mound, retiring seven batters which included recording the final two outs of the game. Randy Button (1-2) also went the full distance for Central Washington to accept the loss.

The two will reconvene at Dehler tomorrow for the second day of their four-game series. First pitch of game-one is scheduled to be thrown out at 1 p.m. and live stats will be available for the game via www.msubsports.com.
