Jackets Even Series with Doubleheader Sweep Sunday

PUEBLO, Colo. – Montana State Billings baseball coach, Rob Bishop, earned his first two victories as Yellowjacket head coach Sunday with a doubleheader sweep at Colorado State-Pueblo. The Jackets' evened their record at 2-2 on the year with a 21-15 and a 6-5 victory over the host Thunderwolves. 

“Our guys really put it together in all facets of the game,” Bishop said. “It was a difficult day to pitch with the wind blowing out. Hutchings (Brian) was terrific on the mound for us today.”
 
The Jackets were led by sophomore transfer Colby Robison who went 6 for 9 with a double, four runs scored, a home run and eight RBI in the doubleheader. Fellow sophomore, Austin Rue went 5 for 8 with two runs scored, a triple and three RBI, while senior Sam Kinzeler went 5 for 7 with five runs scored, three doubles and five RBI.
 
Offense was not in short supply in the doubleheader as both teams hit over .330 with the Jackets hitting .360. MSUB recorded 27 hits with nine doubles, one triple and one home run. The Jackets scored 27 runs with 24 RBI and racked up 41 total bases.
 
CSUP recorded 22 hits with three doubles, three triples and three home runs scoring 20 runs.
 
After dropping the first two games of the series Saturday, the Jackets showed no ill effects as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Robison belted a grand slam for a 4-0 lead.
 
The Thunderwolves cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly and scored a run on a wild pitch. CSUP then cut the deficit to 4-3 in the third on a RBI groundout from Kyle Wager.
 
The Jackets broke the game wide open in the fourth as they plated eight runs highlighted by a Robison three RBI double. Senior Blake Nelson plated two runs on a single and a bases loaded walk. Senior Sam Kinzeler belted a double down the line for a score and Rue hit a triple to right center for the eighth run of the frame and a 12-3 lead.
 
CSUP scored eight runs with five in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to pull within 12-11.
 
MSUB again had the answer plating six runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth for a 21-12 lead.

Kinzeler again came up with a big double, plating three runs to highlight the seventh inning. He then hit another double in the eighth to score his fifth run of the game.

The Thunderwolves scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 21-15 final. Junior Zachary Smith began the game on the mound going 3.1 innings. He allowed eight hits, eight earned runs to go along with three walks and three strikeouts. Smith went 2.2 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, three walks and four strikeouts to pick up the win.
 
Robison continued his impressive play in the nightcap as he hit a single up the middle scoring the first run of the game. CSUP returned the favor in the bottom of the inning for a 1-1 score. The teams then scored a single run in the second inning for a 2-2 score. 
 
The Thunderwolves took the lead in the third on a RBI single and a 3-2 score. The Jackets regained the lead broke in the fourth plating four runs for a 6-3 lead. CSUP wouldn't go quietly as it scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jay Veyna tripled to right f or the first score, followed by a RBI single with two outs.
 
Yellowjacket killer from yesterday, Wager, pinch hit and grounded a ball to third where Rue made a great play to first for the third out leaving the potential winning run on base.
 
Hutchings (1-0) earned the victory for the Jackets as he went six innings, scattering four hits with three earned runs. He walked two and fanned six. Senior Brian Howe earned the save.
