BILLINGS, Mont. – The high-powered offense of No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona came to life Friday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field, as the visiting Broncos handed the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team a tough 4-0 defeat at the Rimrock Classic sponsored by TNT Automotive & Marine.
Four different Broncos found the net during the match, as CPP stayed perfect at 4-0 with a 1-0 halftime lead followed by three goals in the second half. MSUB is still in search of its first win of the year, falling to 0-3 with the defeat.
"This was a deserved victory for CPP, and they are a team with some very talented players," said MSUB head coach
Alex Balog. "We created some good chances and had opportunities to score. Right now we are in a hole as a team, but Sunday is another opportunity to start climbing out of it."
Scoring his team-leading sixth goal of the season,
It took a fully-extended, diving save
by CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos to
keep this 23-yard free-kick
attempt by Guillaume Kremer out
of the net in the 83rd minute Friday.
Sergi Monso gave the Broncos the advantage in the 18th minute. Matt Perez whipped in a perfect cross from the right wing, and Monso dove forward at the near post to direct a header off of the far post and into the net.
Dante Medina had a pair of chances to make the score 2-0 midway through the first, but both of his attempts from inside the box were pushed high of the target.
Monso nearly made it 2-0 with 10 minutes to play before the break, but MSUB goalkeeper
Javier Hernandez slid forward off his line to knock away a shot from point-blank range. The Broncos had a 7-2 edge in shots by halftime, but the 'Jackets evened things out with the shot line at 7-6 in favor of CPP in the second.
Doubling its lead almost instantaneously, CPP punched home a goal in the opening minute of the second half. Kevin Martinez curled a dangerous free kick into the box, and Monso flicked it to Jose Garcia who found the back of the net.
Pressing high into the midfield,
Chad Triplett helped create one of the best scoring chances of the game for the 'Jackets. He and
Niklas Schregel combined to work the ball into the attacking third with numbers on the side of the 'Jackets, and
Dana Kowachek drove a cross into the box from the right side.
JD Hauenstein sped in front of the goal, but was defended well and could not get a shot off from three yards away.
A long through ball to Kowachek resulted in a corner for the 'Jackets with 25 minutes to play, as the junior's powerful shot from inside the box was deflected out of bounds. Schregel got his head on the ensuing cross by
Guillaume Kremer, and his attempt nearly went in as it hit the bottom of the crossbar.
The Broncos put the game away with a pair of goals within two minutes of one another with 20 minutes to go. Jimmie Villalobos calmly finished an open shot in the box past Hernandez, and Monso picked up his second assist to create a similarly open look for Luis Najera inside the box.
The 'Jackets showed a few signs of life offensively late, generating a couple of chances against the Broncos. MSUB's best opportunity to get on the board came in the form of a 23-yard free kick in the 83rd minute. Kremer curled a promising shot past the wall and towards the upper corner, but CPP keeper Jason Trejos made an incredible, fully-extended diving save to brush the shot wide with his fingertips.
Hernandez finished the match with four saves for the 'Jackets in goal.
