SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The first goal of the year for senior
Niklas Schregel gave Montana State University Billings a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on Saturday at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster University, but the Yellowjackets suffered their second straight 2-1 overtime loss as Dixie State University rallied to steal the victory.
Gustavo Ortega scored both goals for Dixie State, including the game-winner just over two minutes into overtime after a give-away by the 'Jackets in the back. The Trailblazers improved to 2-0 on the year and made it consecutive wins over Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents after handing Northwest Nazarene University a 2-1 loss on Thursday.
The Yellowjackets had a golden chance to win the game in the final few minutes, but DSU goalkeeper Zach Nielson managed to stifle a 3-yard shot by
Chad Triplett to send the game to overtime. MSUB fell to 0-2 with the loss.
"I am very proud of how the guys battled today with only a couple of subs," said MSUB head coach
Alex Balog. "We played very organized the first half, and I think both teams deserved something out of the game. We have to credit Dixie State, because they didn't give up when they went down a goal."
MSUB's goal began with a good pass by
Shantik Bedrosian, who found
Sam Phillips with a long ball. The sophomore kept possession patiently, and fed a well-timed through ball to Schregel for a powerful finish from close range.
It was MSUB's only shot of the first half, and one of only three overall in the game that all landed on target.
Nearly 20 minutes into the second half, DSU broke through and evened the score line. Ortega redirected a cross by Ather Dawood with his head towards the far post from six yards away for his first goal of the game.
Adam Hepburn contributed 87
solid minutes for the 'Jackets in
the midfield on Saturday.
Freshman goalkeeper
Javier Hernandez faced 17 shots and seven on target, coming away with five saves. His final stop of the match came on the game winning goal, as Ortega followed the deflection and tapped it home to end the match.
Junior midfielder
Adam Hepburn contributed 87 strong minutes for the 'Jackets, who were limited in terms of depth due both to injury and one-game suspensions for red cards received in Thursday's match against Westminster. "Adam had great energy today, made strong tackles, and connected many passes," Balog said. "That guy really did his job."
Guillaume Kremer had MSUB's other shot, testing Nielson with an attempt on frame in the 52nd minute.
"Overall we are disappointed with this trip, and we need to start preparing for the challenge next week," Balog said after the back-to-back narrow, overtime losses. "We will make sure we are well-organized against Cal Poly Pomona."
THE BUZZ: Hepburn was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…sophomore
Ignacio Crespo made his first collegiate start, playing as center attacking midfielder…Saturday marked DSU's first-ever win over MSUB, as the Yellowjackets had previously been 3-0 including 2-0 in neutral-site contests against the Trailblazers…the goal was the sixth of Schregel's career.
