Saken and Huft in the Top Six after First Day

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – Melissa Saken and Gage Huft are fourth and sixth after the first day at the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships presented by CDA Monday.

The Yellowjacket women are third out of four GNAC teams, while the MSUB men are fourth out of five. The Montana State Billings' women shot a 344 in the opening round of the championships. Saken carded an 81 in Round 1, after hitting nine pars. She shot a 36 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine. Cayley Fish is in 10th with an 86. Katie Fish is tied for 11th and two strokes behind. BreAnna Cameron (89) and Mariah Cleveland (90) are in 13th and 15th in the 23-golfer field.

Western Washington is in first after the day by 24 strokes over Saint Martin's. The Vikings had a team total of 311 in Round 1, led by defending champion Claire Rachor's 73. She leads the field after a first round two-over-par performance. Teammate Kara Zitzman and Saint Martin's Mandy Wittmer are both two strokes behind. WWU's top four golfers are in the top six.

Huft leads the Yellowjacket men in sixth place. The sophomore opened the tournament with a pair of consistent rounds. He shot a 74 in Round 1 and a 74 in Round 2. Huft leads the 25-golfer field shooting two-under-par on par-three holes in the first two rounds. Eric Gravbrot and Marcus Drange are tied in ninth at eight-over-par with 150 totals. Brad Harrelson (156) and Houston Bradbury (174) are in 19th and 25th.

Jake Webb of Western Washington is the lone golfer under-par at four-under. He followed his first round 70 with a tournament-low 68. Teammate Dylan Goodwin and Simon Fraser's John Mlikotic are tied in second at even-par. The Vikings, ranked second in the West Region, have a five-stroke lead over unranked Simon Fraser. Saint Martin's follows in third with a 593.

The second day of the championships at the Coeur d'Alene Resort begins at 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time. The men tee-off first at 7:30 on Hole 1, and the women follow at 8 from Hole 10.
