BILLINGS, Mont.- The Montana State University Billings golf teams hosted their second annual Briarwood Shootout with a standout performance from the Yellowjackets, as the women swept both the team and individual titles. Across both teams, MSUB placed 13 golfers in the top ten—seven men and six women.
HEAR FROM COACH BUIE: "This week was an adventure for us. We had snow on Monday for about 3-4 hours and weren't even sure if we were going to play but luckily we were able to get both rounds in. Today the scoreboard website went down for a few hours and lost access to our online scoring."
On the women's side, junior
Orraya Tipasathien led the charge, earning her seventh career win with a two-round score of 147 (75-72), just three strokes off her record. The Yellowjackets' "A" team posted rounds of 312 and 314 to finish first with a total score of 626. The "B" team also impressed, taking third place out of six teams with a 674.
MSUB dominated the women's field statistically—leading in total pars (84), birdies (17), and the only eagle, courtesy of Tipasathien. The Jackets also led in par-4 (4.47 avg.) and par-5 scoring (5.22 avg.).
Ella Tannenberger earned runner-up honors with a 153 (73-80), highlighted by the lowest round of day one (73). Other top ten finishers included
Hannah Adams (6th, 164),
Kyleigh McGowen (B) (7th, 165),
Haylee Adams (B) (T-8th, 166), and
Hanna Boyd (10th, 167). Rachel Rerich (T-11th, 168),
Pygmy Kompoj (T-15th, 167),
Emy Cambuzat (T-23rd, 175), and
Chloe Van Strien (28th, 180) also competed strongly.
HEAR FROM COACH BUIE: "Jan continues to set record after record, winning her second tournament of the fall and the seventh of her career. The women's team picked up a win for the first time this season in a field that included a GNAC school. Ella was strong with her second place finish and we also had multiple in the top ten with Hannah in sixth, Kyleigh in seventh, Haylee at eighth, and
Hanna Boyd in tenth."
On the men's side, the "A" and "B" teams battled closely, finishing just six strokes apart. The "A" team secured second place with a total of 593 (297-296), while the "B" team finished fourth at 599 (301-298). Similarly to the women, MSUB led the field in total pars (111), par-5 average (4.85), and par-3 average (3.20).
Kaopun Akmaneenin (B) led the way individually, carding a career-best 146 (72-74) to finish third.
Peyton Toney followed closely, also setting a personal best with a 147 (74-73) to take fourth.
Aubrey Kelley tied for fifth at 148 (74-74), while
Pete Netrnilweerachot,
Bowdie Fox (B), and
Payton Black (B) all tied for ninth at 149.
Cracking the top 20 was
Ryder Conner in 17
th place at 154 (77-77) and
Mark Pramounmat who tied for 19
th at 156 (79-77). Rounding it out for the men was
Ryan Badger who tied for 23
rd at 160 (88-72),
Cameron Hackmann who tied for 26
th at 161 (78-83), and
Trey Engellant (IND) in 34
th at 177.
HEAR FROM COACH BUIE: "The men's team battled throughout the entire event. I thought we had good attitudes and played hard which are the main things I ask for. Kaopun, Peyton, and Aubrey each had their best MSUB event, finishing in third, fourth, and fifth respectively to make the all-tournament team. The men's fall season includes one win and two second place finishes in just five events. We have a deep roster where the top five can change week to week which makes things competitive. Plenty of things to build on as we head into the spring."
