MSUB Women’s Golf Climbs to Second on Day 2

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Montana State University Billings' women's golf team jumped from fourth place to second in the final round of the Maverick Spring Invitational.

The Yellowjackets' second round 348 total was two strokes better than their first round total, and gave MSUB a 698 tournament total. MSU Billings was 11 strokes behind the winner, Colorado State-Pueblo. The Yellowjackets were 10 strokes ahead of the host school, Colorado Mesa.

BreAnna Cameron finished sixth in the 33-golfer field. The junior shot an 87 in the first round and was in 12th. Tuesday, she climbed six places with a second round scorecard of 85. Katie Fish went from 19th to seventh after shooting an 84 in the second round. She shot a 90 in Round 1. Melissa Saken was consistent shooting an 88 in both the first and second rounds. Cayley Fish tied for 11th, and Capri Ingram and Mariah Cleveland tied for 16th with 183 totals.

Regis' Nicole Hulbert used her tournament-low first round total of 75 to hold on for medalist honors. She carded an 87 in the second round for a 162 tournament total. Colorado Mesa's Michelle Stripp was four strokes behind, and Hee-Leina Kim of CSU-Pueblo finished third.

In Turlock, Calif., the MSU Billings' men remained and finished in 12th place at the 40th annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational. After shooting a 327 in the second round, MSUB carded a 328 in the final round as a team Tuesday. The Yellowjackets opened the tournament with a 309.

Eric Gravbrot had the best finish for Montana State Billings. The sophomore finished in 29th with a 234 total. He recorded a 79 in both the first and second rounds, and then shot a 76 in the third round. Gage Huft finished in 34th with a 236. Houston Bradbury carded a 244 (56th), Brad Harrelson had a 251 (74th), and Marcus Drange shot a 257 (79th). Competing individually, Wyatt Nielsen finished with a 247 in 66th place.

The host, No. 15 Cal State-Stanislaus held off No. 8 Cal State-Monterey Bay for the team title. Stanislaus had a 15-stroke lead over the Otters after the first two rounds, but finished just two strokes ahead in the final standings. Cal State-Stanislaus' Trevor Clayton was the lone golfer to finish under-par. The freshman's 214 was two-under-par. Western Washington finished third led by a four-over-par second place finish by Mark Strickland.

The tournaments were the final regular season tune-ups for the Yellowjackets. Montana State Billings travels to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for the Great Northwest Athletic Championships on April 22-23. The tournaments will be played at the Coeur d'Alene Resort.
