High Winds Shorten Wildcat Classic

CORNING, Cali. –The wind won the day on Tuesday, at the InterWest Insurance Wildcat Classic.

Sustained winds of 25 miles per hour-plus had golf balls rolling off the green and forced the cancellation of the final round. Chico State was named the tournament champion by virtue of its 5-under par 571 through 36 holes.

Chico State's Ricky Owaki, who finished fourth at the same tournament last season, won the individual title by three strokes on the strength of a tournament-tying second-round 66 Monday. The senior shot seven-under par for his first collegiate title. Cal State Stanislaus' Anthony Manguray (-4) finished second, and Chico State's Lee Gearhart, Cal State Stanislaus' Trevor Clayton, and Simon Fraser's Bret Thompson finished tied for third at 2-under par.

"It was unfortunate the final round was cancelled," Montana State University Billings Head coach Shawn O'Brien said. "We were leading the field catching a lot of teams when the round was suspended. The men were fighting hard in the wind as this is something which we are used to playing in. I support the decision of canceling the round because the wind was pushing balls off the green which makes golf unplayable. We needed to play better yesterday and we just didn't get it done. We played poor in the first two rounds costing us a lot of positions."
