Vanderby Highlights Great Night for MSUB Track and Field

FULL RESULTS

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State University Billings' track and field student-athlete, Tyson Vanderby, ran the fastest mile time in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference so far this season at the Montana State University Open Friday.

Vanderby finished third in the event with a time of 4:21.73, which converts to 4:15.8 after the altitude adjustment. The senior's time broke the school record, set just last Saturday at the Bronco Invitational by Robert Peterson at 4:22.37. Vanderby's mark is the sixth automatic-qualifying mark for MSUB to the GNAC Indoor Championships. Nationally, it was a second shy of a NCAA Div. II provisional-qualifying mark, but is the 13th best in the country currently.

Peterson finished the mile in fifth at 4:22, and after the altitude adjustment has the second best time in the GNAC.

On the women's side, Shelby Martinell was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles with a new school record time of 8.83. It improves her already set GNAC provisional mark she recorded at the season-opening meet at Black Hills State.

Renae Hepfner ran a 5:24 mile, adjusted to 5:17, and moves her up to third in the GNAC. She also has a provisional mark for the Yellowjackets.

Drew Galahan won the men's 800 meters, crossing the line at 1:58.25. The junior already has a provisional-qualifying conference mark of 1:57.58, which is third in the GNAC. Teammate Chase Robinson followed in second with a time of 1:59.32.

Tanner Rottrup finished third in the men's shot put. The GNAC leader in the event had a top throw of 50 feet, two inches (15.29 meters).

"I'd say Tyson's mile was one of the highlights of the meet," MSUB Head Coach Dave Coppock said. "We made a lot of prgress here tonight and hope to keep building toward conference. We are hoping for a good week of practice next week in preparation for Idaho State."

The Yellowjackets travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Mountain State Games hosted by Idaho State University next Friday and Saturday. The meet begins at 12 p.m. on Friday, and 9 a.m. on Saturday. The meet will have live results on MSUBSports.com.
