SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Montana State University Billings track and field teams completed their final tune-up meet prior to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor track and field Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets competed in Black Hills State University sponsored Rock and Jock Indoor Open and had several strong finishes to their regular-season finale.
“I feel like we're in a great position heading into next weekend's conference meet,” said head coach
Dave Coppock. “We had another great performance from our athletes at the Rock and Jock. We'll be entering our athletes into the conference meet this Monday afternoon and will find out how many make the cut after all the teams have entered or scratched athletes from particular events. We should be taking nearly the entire squad, which is a testament to how hard they've worked since September in getting to this point. We put a lot of miles in on the bus to get to the meets in order to attain our qualifying marks, so it will be rewarding for them to mark it to our conference championship meet.”
Two school records were broken Saturday afternoon and five different athletes won their events.
On the women's side,
Stacey Pitt won the pole vault event with a vault of 11-7 3/4 , breaking the school record. The mark met the provisional mark for the national meet and ranks her 19
th in the country.
In the throwing events,
Leeza Henry won the shot put with a put of 44-6 3/4 while
Anica Knispel claimed the weight throw with a toss of 49-7. Henry's put was 3/4 of an inch better than her previous provisional national qualifying mark.
Also for the women, Cory Holm added another provisional conference qualifying put for the Yellowjackets.
On the men's side,
Tanner Rottrup won the men's shot put with a put of 52-1 which now has him tops in the GNAC by three feet. It also bested his previous school record.
Tyson Vanderby won the men's 800 meter run in a time of 1:59.33 and
Shae Stein finished second in both the men's long jump (21-2 3/4) as well as the 60 meter dash and was third in the triple jump with a distance of 39-8. His 60 meter dash time of 7.14 was a GNAC provisional qualifier.
The Yellowjackets will now focus on preparing for the 2012 GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Nampa, Idaho this weekend.
