Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings women's soccer team got back into the winners' column with their victory Thursday over Central Washington. The Yellowjackets looked to carry that momentum into their Saturday match with conference rival Seattle Pacific. While MSUB played a very competitive match, the Falcons were able to defeat the Jackets 3-0 with a strong second half.
The Yellowjackets and Falcons both came out aggressive on offense trying to get the early advantage in possession. From the start until the 15
th minute MSUB took three shots compared to the opposition's two.
Heidi Greenback and
Jaucelyn Richter's shots were off target, while the Falcons' Ali Martin landed a shot on goal that was saved by
Aiko Johnson. This would be a common theme and prove to be the major difference in the match.
Seattle Pacific controlled possession between the 24
th and 32
nd minute, taking two shots with one landing on target that was saved by freshman midfielder
Teegan Koster. The Yellowjackets regained possession in the 34
th minute and held it for the remainder of the half.
MSUB took four shots to close out the first half but only Koster's attempt was on target. Alexa Hughes came up with a nice save on the play. While the Yellowjackets outshot their opponent 7-5, none of their attempts produced any goals and they entered the break tied 0-0.
Seattle Pacific offense was extremely efficient in the second half. After a
Chelsea Shuman header attempt that went high at 47:34, the Falcons quickly countered in the 51
st minute with a Laura Moore shot that found the left side of the net. Seattle Pacific took the 1-0 lead.
The Falcons stayed on the attack and scored their second goal of the match in the 58
th minute. Alexa Diaz put a corner kick in play and Riley Dopps shot a 16 yard blast that landed in the back of the net giving Seattle Pacific a firm 2-0 advantage.
MSUB countered in the 65
th minute of play with a Richter shot, but Seattle Pacific's Hughes saved the attempt. As if facing a two goal deficit against a highly talented opponent wasn't already challenging, this feat became more difficult as the Falcons increased their lead to three.
At 73:47 Megan Lindsay completed a 15 yard shot attempt off an assist from Annie Thomas, to give Seattle Pacific a 3-0 lead.
Shuman took the final shot attempt for the Jackets in the 89
th minute but her attempt landed high and the Falcons went on to claim the victory improving to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Johnson made her 14
th consecutive start and ended with two saves on the day. Seattle Pacific held the advantage in total shots 11-10, and shot on goal attempts 6-2.
The Yellowjackets are now 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the GNAC. Their next conference match will be a home contest on Thursday, Oct. 18 versus Western Washington University.
