BILLINGS, Mont. -- Fifty-seven mile per hour gusts blew across Yellowjacket Field Saturday afternoon as the Montana State Billings women's soccer team was unable to upend the No.13 nationally ranked Falcons of Seattle Pacific University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
“The team obviously played well today,” said interim head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. “We created a lot of chances for ourselves, especially in the first half. The second half we didn't register a shot, but we were creating chances with good crosses. Our possession was good, I felt like we moved the ball well and kept the ball during a majority of the game. Jen (Larsen) and Jaucelyn (Richter) played great matches today and the shot by Jen was a tremendous finish. Those two as captains really stepped up and showed great leadership today. We're disappointed, but we have a season to finish next week and that's what we're going to prepare for this week.”
The Yellowjackets fell to 10-3-4 on the year and are now 7-2-4 in the conference after the loss. The Falcons improved to 15-2-0 on the season and are now 12-1-0 in the conference.
With losses by other higher ranked teams this weekend; MSUB could still has an outside shot for a postseason berth.
SPU got on the board first when Brandi Hamre ripped a low line-drive into the lower left corner of the goal after gathering a rebound that ricocheted off the post when Megan Lindsay took the initial shot. The goal was Hamre's fifth of the season and came in the 30
th minute.
The Yellowjackets, with the wind at their back in the first half, answered just before halftime as
Jennifer Larsen took a ball from
Jaucelyn Richter and cracked a shot that nestled into the right corner of the goal for her third score of the season.
With the game destined for overtime, SPU took possession near mid-field with just over a minute remaining. Andrea Chan sent a ball into the box and found Riley Dopps who snuck in behind the Jacket defense, firing a shot into the right corner for the game-winner at 88:28.
Richter led the way for the Yellowjackets as she took five shots, putting two on target. Larsen combined with
Amanda Brusic and
Kristen Kastelic for the other three shots taken by MSUB for a total of eight on the day.
SPU outshot MSUB 21-8, holding the Yellowjackets without a shot in the second half. The Falcons also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
MSUB will return to the pitch next Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host Northwest Nazarene in the regular season finale. Saturday's match will also be senior day, honoring
Danielle Gordon,
Amanda Brusic,
Tyshae Davis and Kelly Minard.
