BURNABY, B.C. -- After playing the first 88 minutes scoreless, the Montana State Billings women's soccer team and the Simon Fraser University Clan combined to score three goals in the final minute and a half of action as the Jackets prevailed in a 2-1 thriller at Terry Fox Field Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets, earning a much-needed victory, improved their record to 9-2-4 on the year and are now 6-1-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Simon Fraser dropped to 2-10-1 on the season and is now 1-9-1 in the conference.
“Today was a complete team effort and a reason to continue to play until the final whistle,” said interim head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. “I'm really proud of performance and the way the girls continued to fight during the match. We really needed to come out of here with a victory and did that. Now we have to be ready to go back home and play three tough home matches to finish the regular season.”
MSUB got off to a hot start by putting their first four shots of the match on goal, but SFU keeper Amelia Ng was up to the challenge every time, saving all four shots.
The Clan had a golden opportunity in the 43
rd minute as they had a chance at goal with a penalty kick awarded in the box. Anna Brancati, the Clan's top player, took the kick, but had it saved by
Danielle Gordon. Brancati's follow-up shot would hit the post to keep the match scoreless going into the half.
Both teams had chances in the early going of the second half, but both keepers continued to make saves. The Jackets finally broke through in the 89
th minute at 88:34 when junior
Kristen Kastelic got her head on the ball and beat Ng for her second goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.
The goal seemed like it would hold up with less than a minute to play, but after earning a corner kick, SFU's Lia Marining leveled the match with her second goal of the season at 89:46.
After kicking off again to start the match, sophomore
Whitney Siler sent a perfect ball into junior
Jaucelyn Richter with the 10 second count winding down and Richter blasted a shot past Ng with just two seconds remaining on the clock for the game-winner and her eighth goal of the year.
Despite being a defender, Kastelic led the team with five shots, three on goal, while Richter took four and three.
Heidi Greenback registered three shots, one on goal, while senior
Amanda Brusic and sophomore
Whitney Siler each had one chance.
The Yellowjackets controlled the shot count with a 15-10 edge in total shots, while dominating the shots on goal 10-4. MSUB also controlled the corners in the match with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks as both teams earned 13 fouls apiece.
Gordon made three saves in the match to improve her record to 9-2-4, while Ng dropped to 2-8-1 despite making seven saves in the match.
The Yellowjackets, who finished their 2011 road schedule, will return home next week to host Central Washington and Seattle Pacific in a pair of crucial GNAC contests.
