Women’s Soccer Plays Vikings to Scoreless Draw

Box Score Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Montana State Billings women's soccer team fought off a relentless Western Washington attack Thursday night at Orca Field in Bellingham as the Jackets turned away 24 shots, 12 on goal, to earn a 0-0 draw in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

“I thought the team played a great match tonight,” said assistant coach Kari Foreman. “Western Washington is a good team and this is always a tough place to play. The team came out ready to play and Danielle (Gordon) made a couple of key saves to keep us in the match. It's good to earn a point and keep us in the hunt for the postseason.”

MSUB keeper Danielle Gordon made save after save in recording a career-high 12 saves as the Yellowjackets improved their record to 8-2-4 on the year and 5-1-4 in the conference. The Vikings, who are winless against the Jackets in two seasons, improved to 6-5-3 overall and 5-4-1 in the GNAC.

Sophomore Heidi Greenback took four of the six total shots by the Yellowjackets on the evening, while senior Tyshae Davis and junior Jaucelyn Richter also recorded shots.

For the Vikings it was Megan Chapin leading the way with five total shots, while Joana Houplin registered four and Kristen Maris, Brina Sych and Kelly Cates all had three. The Vikings outshot MSUB 24-12 and held a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Yellowjackets saw their greatest chance of the first half come in the 35th minute when Richter cracked a shot toward goal, but Viking keeper Jamie Arthurs made her first of two saves on the night.

Davis had chance to end the match in regulation when she put her shot on frame with four seconds left in the match, but Arthurs again came up with a save to keep the match at 0-0.

Neither team had a shot on goal in the first overtime, but the Vikings created a chance in the 102nd minute as Chapin ripped another shot, but was denied once again by Gordon.

The Yellowjackets will now travel to Burnaby, B.C., to try and repeat their first performance against Simon Fraser, a 4-1 victory at home in late September. The game can be seen on Simon Fraser's athletic website.
