HILO, HI – The Montana State-Billings men's and women's golf teams sit in second and third place respectively after the first day of the Pacific West Conference Championships. The Yellowjacket men shot a 294 (+11) combined team score, and the Lady Jackets carded a season-best 345 (+61). Play will resume Friday with a 7 a.m. tee time in Hilo, Hawaii.
Host team Hawaii-Hilo holds first place in the men's draw with a 7-under 277 on the par 71 course. The Jackets are holding a one stroke lead over third place Western New Mexico (295). Hawaii Pacific University shot a 19-over par 302 combined. Brigham Young University-Hawaii shot 313 after day one and Chaminade rounds out the final six with a 395.
Colin Gilliam of Hawaii-Hilo shot a 3-under 68 for the one stroke lead over teammate Kevin Shimomura. Leading the Yellowjackets is
Chris McConnell (Jr., Lewistown, MT) who holds fifth place shooting 37 and 34 for a par 71. Teammate Nick Larson (Fr., Riverton, WY) is tied for sixth with a 2-over 73.
The Lady Jackets trail second place Hawaii-Hilo by ten strokes. Holding the top spot after day one is Western New Mexico with a comfortable 24 stroke lead. BYU-Hawaii is in the fourth position with 417. Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific hold fifth and sixth with a 473 and 501 respectively.
Halley Montalban (Fr., Billings, MT) shot 39 and 37 for a 76 placing her second in the individual competition.
Julie Clifford (Jr., Forsyth, MT) is tied for ninth with an 86 (+15). Leading the scoreboard is Katharine Dorris from Western New Mexico with a 2-over 73.
Competition continues Friday with an 8 a.m. tee time.
