BILLINGS, MT – The first tournaments of the 2004-2005 college golf season are complete for the MSU Billings golf teams. Both the men and the women experienced mixed results with a few solid individual performances.
The men's varsity played at the Western Washington Invitational, held at the 6,523-yard par-72 Bellingham Golf and Country Club. The Yellowjackets finished tenth out of 11 teams. Freshman
Zach Abels of Twin Falls, Ida., led the Jackets in his first collegiate event with rounds of 74, 77 and 73 to finish at an 8-over 224. That was good enough for a tie for 31
st place in the 60-player field.
Chris McConnell (Jr., Lewistown, MT) and
Nicholas Larson (Fr., Riverton, WY) finished in a tie for 41
stplace at a 13-over 229. McConnell rebounded from a first round 80 to card rounds of 75 and 74. Larson shot a consistent 77, 75, 77.
Chris Haas (Jr., Bozeman, MT) and team captain
Bryan Barthelmess (Sr., Condon, MT) rounded out the Jackets' five players at 14-over and 23-over respectively.
The men's JV team and the women's varsity competed at the Rocky Mountain Invitational at Peter Yegen Golf Club in Billings.
