Men’s Soccer All-Decade Team: Midfielders

9/1/2020 9:13:00 AM

MSUB SPORTS – The Yellowjacket men's soccer program asked a lot out of its midfield unit throughout the 2010s, typically playing a 4-3-3 formation with two holding midfielders and one attacking mid directly behind the forwards.

The decade's most skilled technical players, whether it be with the ball on their feet or through their field vision and distribution, reside in the midfield unit.

The Starters

Shantik Bedrosianall-decadebedrosian
Position: Center Attacking Midfielder
Hometown: Doetinchem, Netherlands
Playing Years: 2017-Current (4 seasons)

One of the most gifted players on the ball the program has ever seen, the Yellowjackets will seek to benefit from having Bedrosian in the program for one more season. After an injury-ridden start to his career, Bedrosian showed what he is capable in 2019 as he started 17 matches and earned first-team all-conference recognition. With his senior season on the horizon, Bedrosian has contributed five goals and eight assists, for a total of 18 points in the 40 matches he has played.

One of Bedrosian's signature moments came last fall, under the lights at Interbay Stadium against Seattle Pacific University on Oct. 12, 2019. With the game scoreless and overtime looming 12 minutes away, Bedrosian stepped up to convert a game-winning penalty kick to help his team to a 1-0 shutout win. He had at least one point in eight different matches last year, and was the team's primary set piece delivery man.

Thomas Chameraud (Bedrosian's Assistant Coach 2017-2018, Head Coach 2019-Current): "Technically when he has the ball, he is a great player. He is very good in tight spaces and in one-v-one situations, and he is guaranteed to pass any defender."

Alex Balog (Bedrosian's Head Coach 2017-2018): "Technically Shant is maybe the best player that I have seen at MSUB. His personality is such a great fit with his teammates, and he is someone who can make a tense moment a little lighter. He can see the big picture, and he is a great teammate. He deserves a lot of recognition, and he is one of the biggest threats in the GNAC."

Thomas Chameraud – Team Captain, Player of the Decadeall-decadechameraud
Position: Holding Midfielder
Hometown: Niort, France
Playing Years: 2011-2012 (2 seasons)

From small-town France to Billings, Montana, nobody has embodied the spirit of the Yellowjacket men's soccer program quite like Chameraud. An all-region, record-setting midfielder during his two-year career, Chameraud latched on as an assistant coach in 2013 and seven years later in 2020 is entering his second full season at the helm as MSUB's head coach.

Chameraud is humble about his selection to captain the all-decade team, but his playing resume as well as feedback from his former coaches bolster his status as the top men's soccer player of the 2010s. Making an immediate impact as a junior in 2011, Chameraud led the team with seven assists while starting all 18 matches in the midfield unit. Chameraud fully arrived as a senior in 2012, scoring five goals and adding 11 assists en route to first-team all-GNAC and first-team all-region accolades to finish his career. He captained the Yellowjackets to an 11-5-2 record, the program's top team performance of the decade.

Chameraud remains tied for No. 2 in the MSUB record books with 18 assists, and his 11 assists during the 2012 season remain as a school record. One of his top individual games was a school-record four assists against University of Mary on Oct. 27, 2012, which was one of four multi-assist games in his career.

Chameraud on his favorite MSUB memory: "Our trip to Hawaii senior year. We won all three games over there, and had some great times with team bonding on the beach and seeing Pearl Harbor. It was a good time, and my parents were here from France traveling with us as well."

Alex Balog (Chameraud's Assistant Coach 2011-12, Co-Coach 2013-2018): "My friend, my right-hand man. The player who, with a touch of class, could unlock a game. He could take beating after beating on the field, and would still find a way to get up and continue playing and lead his teammates around him. Off the field, he has embraced Billings, made it his home, and who genuinely deserves to be the head coach of the program. He knows how to lead because of all the work he has put in."

Dan McNally (Chameraud's Head Coach 2011-12): "One of the very best players I coached in my time at MSUB. A leader and a winner. Outstanding."

Where is he now? Chameraud resides in Billings with his wife Melissa and children Lorik and Massilia. He is in his second season as head coach of the Yellowjacket men's soccer team.

Guillaume Kremerall-decadekremer
Position: Holding Midfielder
Hometown: Metz, France
Playing Years: 2016-2018 (3 seasons)

Feature Story: Capitaine Kremer

With the rare combination of character, leadership, and skillset, Kremer was awarded the captain's arm band in his very first season on the pitch in 2016. He wound up as a three-time all-conference midfielder, and one of the most passionate and respected leaders of the decade.

Kremer's top campaign came in 2017, when he led the team with nine goals and totaled 23 points. Seven of his goals that year came on set pieces, as he established himself as the top free-kick taker in the conference. One of his most significant on-field contributions came on Oct. 26, 2017, when the Yellowjackets hosted No. 9 Simon Fraser University. Kremer curled in a signature 25-yard free kick in the 38th minute, helping MSUB equalize the score at 1-1 shortly before halftime. The 'Jackets went on to a 2-1 victory, a triumph that still stands as the program's only victory over one of the premier soccer teams in NCAA Division II.

Kremer is tied for 10th in MSUB history with 14 goals, is tied for fifth with 16 assists, and is tied for seventh in points with 44 throughout his three seasons. Among his many accolades include all-region, two-time academic all-district, two-time academic all-GNAC, three-time GNAC Player of the Week, two-time MSUB Men's Soccer Player of the Year, and the 2017-18 MSUB Male Athlete of the Year.

Kremer on how his MSUB experience has shaped him: "I met people from all around the world who are still today my best friends and whom I talk regularly with. From a professional standpoint my MSUB experience allowed me to apply to higher positions, speaking English fluently and having lived in the U.S."

Thomas Chameraud (Kremer's Assistant Coach, 2016-2018): "He was our engineer in the midfield. He had great quality of passing, was the best player I have seen on set pieces for deliveries, and had a high IQ."

Alex Balog (Kremer's Head Coach, 2016-2018): "Class; that's how I describe him with one word. A player who had the best set piece striking technique. Very articulate, eloquent, and a player who exemplifies what we want at MSUB. A player who, through setbacks, still had the ability to see the greater picture and to be a great leader."

Where is he now? Kremer currently resides in his home town of Metz, France, where he is a floor manager at Decathlon while also working towards a master's degree in business management at Icadémie.

The Reserves

Fernando Perezall-decadeperez
Position: Holding Midfielder
Hometown: Greeley, Colorado
Playing Years: 2014-2015 (2 seasons)

Feature Story: A Fitting Finish

Perez earned the nod onto the all-decade team by virtue of his quiet, humble leadership and deft skill when it came to the small requirements of the position. According to his former coaches, no one had a better understanding of the role of his position than Perez. It was through his dedication to the craft – rather than headlines and accolades – that he contributed immeasurably to the program.

Perez played in 31 matches in his two seasons with the 'Jackets, anchoring the central midfield unit with his masterful understanding of positioning on the pitch. Perez's crowning moment on the pitch came on Oct. 15, 2015 in a home match against Northwest Nazarene. Early in the second half of a scoreless affair, Perez collected a pass from Julian Toenges and tucked a picture-perfect, one-time, left-footed shot into the upper corner of the net. The goal stood up as the game-winner, long after Perez raced back towards his teammates while kissing the B logo on the front of his jersey.

Perez on the MSUB experience: "The quality of friendships that I made are some of my fondest memories. MSUB has helped me overcome adversity. It's not about the place, but the people you meet along the way."

Thomas Chameraud (Perez's Assistant Coach, 2014-2015): "Fernando was somebody who worked hard on the field, and it was guaranteed that he would give it all for 90 minutes. He is someone who did the dirty work that no one sees during a game. But as a coach when you see him play, it relieves the pressure from his teammates."

Alex Balog (Perez's Head Coach, 2014-2015): "I wish we had Fernando for four years. He always did the dirty work in the shadows without ever complaining. I remember early on we were on a trip and I asked him what his plans were for after college, and he mentioned he wanted to become a coach. Now he is making his living that way. He was a very valuable member of the team."

Where is he now? Perez resides in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he is an assistant coach for the men's soccer program at Laramie County Community College.

Honorable Mention

Niklas Schregelniklasschregel
Position: Holding Midfielder
Hometown: Freialdenhoven, Germany
Playing Years: 2014-2017 (4 seasons)
Schregel was a steady contributor throughout a four-year career at MSUB, overcoming a devastating knee injury and finishing with 66 matches played in the team's midfield unit. Schregel scored nine goals while adding three assists, for 21 total points.

Schregel's 6-foot-4 frame made him a physical force to be reckoned with in the center of the pitch, where he bridged the gap neatly with long strides from the back line to the forwards.
