BOULDER, Colo. – The Montana State University Billings track and field teams did not turn in any record breaking performances this weekend in the Colorado Invitational but received good enough results to hang in the meet with a large field of teams and Division I competition. With representation from more than 10 schools, the 'Jackets had several notable results.
"All in all it was a pretty good trip," commented head coach Jon Woehl. "It's always good to see our athletes match or exceed their season bests. We were pretty consistent in most of our events. With a record number of athletes entered at this meet, it was a long day but we came out okay in the end."
MSUB did most of its damage on day one Friday in field events.
Janessa Williams and
Brenna Beckett recorded season best marks in triple jump and finished 12
th and 13
th respectively among an 18 athlete field. Williams jumped 10.60 meters in the second round and Beckett marked 10.56 meters in her second jump.
Women's hammer throw was led by Taylor Stingari, who threw 137' 10" in her first attempt. Stringari finished 15
th among 30 participants.
Beau Peaslee excelled in both hammer throw and javelin throw for the MSUB men. Peaslee was fifth of 23 with a javelin opening throw of 171'34". Peaslee was 23
rd in hammer throw but still well short of teammate
Brady Ostermiller, who came in 18
th in the event with a mark of 148' 2".
Marcus Lindquist was first in his flight of nine competitors and wound up ninth in triple jump at 43' 5".
Saturday saw mixed results from the 'Jacket runners and throwers.
Isaiah Girard returned to form and tied his high jump school record from earlier this spring at 6' 9". Girard finished fourth behind David Smith (unattached), Kolt Newll (Fort Hayes State), and Jeremy Cody (Colorado). Smith jumped 7' 3" to win the event.
Highlights on day two were less frequent and the Yellowjackets came up with largely average marks in long jump, steeplechase, shot put, hurdles, and discus.
Sam Zook took fifth in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of 11.04 seconds. Khalfani Muhammad (S.H.A.R.K.S Athletic) won the race in 10.67 seconds. Zook, along with
Mason Schram,
Rahkei Eyer, and
Kaelen Shay all posted season highs in the 200 meters for MSUB.
"After the first heat, the winds shifted in the 100 meters," coach Woehl said. "Sam had to fight the wind a bit in his race but still ran well for us."
Nikki Aiken took fifth in women's 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:12.14 and
Kailee Stoppel was seventh of eight runners in her first steeplechase event of the season. She came across the finish line in 13:25.82 for MSUB.
Others to set season bests included
Brady Ostermiller and
Brooke Johnson the 100 and 200 meter dash.
