BILLINGS, Mont. – The 30th annual Montana State University Billings Athletics Hall of Fame & Distinction induction ceremony featured the introduction of Navin Marimuthu, Matt Schoonover, and Shantell (Marquis) Wirtzberger on Friday night at the Hilton Garden Inn.
Â
Schoonover played baseball at MSUB from 2006-10, Wirtzberger, known as Marquis during her playing career, was on the women's basketball team from 2006-11, and Marimuthu competed in men's tennis from 2009-13.
Â
Marimuthu was introduced on Friday evening by both of his coaches at MSUB, Jerry Peach and Lew Kosich. Peach took to the stage first and provided fond and humorous memories of recruiting Marimuthu, a native of Chennai, India. Kosich, who coached Marimuthu through his final two seasons, commented on his development into a leader and an all-star both as an athlete and in the classroom.
Â
Marimuthu resides in Billings with his wife BreAnna Cameron, who competed in women's golf at MSUB. He is the fifth tennis player and second men's player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Â
Schoonover's former teammate and husband of Shantell Wirtzberger, Patch Wirtzberger, welcomed the night's second inductee onto the stage. Wirtzberger's career ran parallel to Schoonover's, with the duo competing on the first Yellowjacket baseball teams from 2006-11. Wirtzberger shared stories of his playing days with Schoonover, and read a letter prepared by former MSUB head baseball coach Chris Brown congratulating his former player on being the first from a modern-era baseball team to receive the honor.
Â
Schoonover dedicated his speech to the support of his parents and grandparents. He currently resides in Billings and works for the Billings Mustangs professional baseball club. He is the 11th baseball player and first since the program was reintroduced prior to the 2006 season to be inducted.
Â
Current MSUB women's basketball head coach
Kevin Woodin introduced his former player Wirtzberger, recounting her unique skill as a ball handler during her five years with the 'Jackets. Woodin shared stories of Wirtzberger's competitive edge, and her commitment to return to the program even after suffering a season-ending injury in what would have been her senior year. Woodin also read prepared comments from former teammates Jetton (Meadors) Ailes, Mandy (Jacobs) Anderson, and
Bobbi Knudsen, the former and latter of which were in attendance.
Â
Wirtzberger reflected on the bonds she fostered with her teammates and friends during her time as a Yellowjacket. The former point guard, who still holds the MSUB single-game record with 10 steals, complimented Knudsen as being the "best player she had ever played with," and also made mention of former Yellowjacket guard Lisa Jellum who was influential in shaping her into a leader on the court.
Â
Wirtzberger and her husband Patch reside in Havre, where she is a middle school English and reading teacher. They have three children, Brantley (7), Tenley (5), and Presley (6 months). She is the 26th women's basketball player to be inducted.
