HUNTLEY, Mont. – With four of its five players finishing in the top-10, the Montana State University Billings women's golf team fired a 622 (313-309) to cruise to the team victory at the 2015 St. Vincent Healthcare Yellowjacket Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Pryor Creek Golf Club.
The Yellowjackets led by 30 strokes after a first-round total of 313, and played even better in the second round and tied their 2014-15 single-round season low with a 309 in Round 2.
"Our women played amazing today," said MSUB head coach Shawn O'Brien. "Everyone hit the ball great."
The single round of 309 carded by the Yellowjacket women on Tuesday was the fourth-lowest in the program's history.
Sammy Walter led the way for the Yellowjackets in third place by shooting a 154 (78-76), improving by two strokes in her second round. The freshman finished the tournament with 18 pars and five birdies, and was named the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day on Tuesday.
"Sammy is playing fantastic right now and hitting the ball very well," O'Brien said.
Just one stroke behind Walter was
Haley Shackelford, who shot a 155 (78-77). Shackelford tied for the second-most pars in the tournament with 22 and had four birdies as well.
Finishing in sixth place was freshman
Bailee Dexter, who fired a 156 (81-75) and used six fewer strokes her second time through the course. Dexter finished with 17 pars and a tournament second-best six birdies.
Mariah Cleveland landed a top-10 finish, shooting a 157 (76-81) over the two rounds. The senior captain tied for the second-most pars with 22 and also had three birdies in the tournament.
Also improving on the final day was MSUB's
Carlan Campbell, who cut off 11 strokes and finished with a 179 (95-84).
Taking home medalist honors was Kyla Clancy of Rocky Mountain College with a 151 (76-75), as she edged Carroll College's Jackie Mee (152, 75-77) by one stroke. The Battlin' Bears finished in a distant second place with a team score of 667 (339-328), while Carroll was two strokes behind in third at 669 (333-336).
Clancy, Mee, Walter, and Shackelford each earned all-tournament honors by finishing in the top-5, and Amanda Johnson of Black Hills State joined the group with that honor by tying Shackelford in fourth with a 155 (78-77).
"I am excited to get on the road and play in Arizona later this week," O'Brien said.

NEXT UP: The Yellowjackets will prepare for the Western New Mexico Invitational, which kicks off on Friday at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. The tournament will serve as the final tune-up before the team's return to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships at the Coeur d'Alene Resort on April 20-21.
