WEST JORDAN, Utah — The Montana State University Billings golf team turned in one of the strongest two-round performances in program history Monday, finishing fourth at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational with a 604 (298-306) at Glenmoor Golf Club.
 
The Yellowjackets opened the tournament with a 298 on Sunday, tying for the second-lowest single-round team score in program history, before closing with a 306 in Monday's final round to record the second-lowest 36-hole score in program history. MSUB finished just one stroke behind host Westminster, which placed third at 603, while Point Loma won the team title at 577.
 
The Yellowjackets' opening-round 298 immediately put the team in contention near the top of the leaderboard, with MSUB carrying its strong start into Monday's final round. The 'Jackets finished the 36-hole event at 604, marking another significant program milestone while placing fourth among the 14 teams in the field. MSUB's consistency was particularly evident across the course's par-4 and par-5 holes, where the Yellowjackets ranked third in the field with a 4.29 average on par 4s and tied for fourth with a 4.97 average on par 5s. The team also tied for sixth in par-3 scoring at 3.33.
 
Senior Kyleigh McGowen paced the Yellowjackets throughout the tournament, finishing tied for eighth individually with a two-round score of 147 (73-74). McGowen's opening-round 73 tied her single-round career best, while her 147 broke her previous career best for a 36-hole tournament score. Her performance kept her among the top individuals in the field throughout both rounds, as she followed her career-best-tying opening round with a 74 on Monday to finish at 5-over par.
 
Junior Pygmy Kompoj also delivered a career-best performance for the Yellowjackets, finishing tied for 11th overall with a 149 (73-75). Kompoj established new personal bests for both her single-round score and her two-round tournament total, remaining within the top 15 of the individual leaderboard through the conclusion of the tournament. She was especially effective on par-4 holes, averaging 4.05 strokes per hole, which ranked tied for second in the tournament.
 
Junior Maria Briceno finished tied for 24th with a 154 (80-74), shooting back-to-back 77's. After her 77 on Monday, this helped her climb seven spots on the leaderboard and help the Yellowjackets maintain their position in the team standings.
 
Reigning GNAC Golfer of the Week, Emy Cambuzat finished tied for 28th with a 155 (75-80), while junior Ella Tannenberger tied for 36th at 157 (77-80). Tannenberger's tournament included particularly strong scoring on par-3 and par-5 holes, where she averaged 3.00 and 4.88 strokes, respectively. Cambuzat and Tannenberger both contributed counting scores in each of MSUB's two team rounds as the Yellowjackets put together their historic 604.
 
Sophomore Hanna Boyd, competing individually, also established new personal bests during the tournament. Boyd finished with a two-round score of 158 (77-81), tying for 46th overall. Her 77 in the opening round and 81 in the final round produced a new single-round personal best as well as a new two-round personal best.
 
The Yellowjackets' opening round was the foundation of their historic team performance. MSUB combined McGowen's 73 and Kompoj's 74 with strong rounds throughout the lineup to card a 298, tying the second-lowest single-round score in program history. The team then returned Monday and posted a 306, giving the 'Jackets a 604 for the tournament and the second-lowest 36-hole score in Montana State University Billings women's golf history.
 
MSUB also showed its depth through its overall statistical performance. The Yellowjackets finished the tournament with 105 total pars and 20 birdies, while their 49 bogeys ranked ninth in the field. The 'Jackets' 20 birdies tied for fourth among the teams competing, and their 105 pars tied for third. MSUB's ability to limit mistakes while continuing to produce scoring opportunities helped the team remain within striking distance of the top three throughout the tournament.
 
On the individual scoring side, Kompoj's 4.05 average on par-4 holes ranked among the tournament leaders, while McGowen averaged 4.10 on par 4s and 4.88 on par 5s. Tannenberger was particularly steady on the par 3s, averaging exactly 3.00 strokes per hole, and also averaged 4.88 on par 5s. Those performances helped MSUB rank among the field leaders across several scoring categories.
 
UP NEXT: With several golfers establishing or surpassing career marks in Utah, MSUB returns home next month to host the Yellowjacket Fall Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 4-6 at Lake Hills Golf Course in Billings.
