MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Track and Field Teams wrapped up their regular season with a solid showing at the Montana Open hosted by the University of Montana.

The highlight of the competition came in the men's 1500 meters when Robert Peterson and Chase Robinson finished second and third at the meet, but both broke the previous MSUB record, a forty-two year record set by Paul Carpenter from 1972 of 3:55.80 with Peterson finishing in a time of 3:54.79 and Robinson with a time of 3:54.96.

With those marks, both Peterson and Robinson are now automatically qualified for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference meet next week, and they also met the provisional NCAA Div. II qualifying mark for nationals.

"I would say that was just an outstanding effort from both athletes," Head Coach Dave Coppock stated.  "We had some great results today on several events with three new school records being set, but that men's 1500 m race was definitely a great highlight and sets both Robert and Chase up with great times for the conference meet."

Besides the men's 1500 m, Cole Campbell continues to make and break records in the men's pole vault.  During the MSU Billings' home event, the Battlin' Bear / Yellowjacket Open, Campbell set a new school record and he did it again this week with a height of 14' 5.25" (4.40m).  Campbell is now ranked at No. 4 in the GNAC and is an automatic qualifier for the conference meet.

With the third school record of the day, the MSUB women's 4 x 100 m relay team of Kaytlin Halle, Hope Reid, Shelby Martinell, and Blair Street finished the race in a time of 49.77 breaking the previous record of 49.86 set by Berry, Bond, Simons, and Halle from 2011.

Jamon Rodrigues won the men's 5,000 m run, improving his time to 15:25.30 which meets the PQ time for the GNAC.

Drew Galahan finished second in the men's 800 m with a time of 1:55.50.  Tyler DiGiovanni placed second in the men's 100 m with a time of 22.65.

AJ Montanez placed second in the men's discus (44.53m) and third in the men's shot put (15.42m).  The throw in the discus has Montanez hitting the PQ mark in the GNAC.  He has already automatically qualified for the conference meet in the shot put and hammer throw.
Nocona Frame improved her time in the women's 1500 m race, placing third at the meet with a time of 4:44.03.

In attendance at the meet in Missoula were student-athletes from: Div. I host school the University of Montana and Montana State, along with NAIA, Rocky Mountain College, University of Great Falls, Carroll College and Div. II MSU Billings.

Next week, the Montana State University Billings student-athletes that qualified for the conference meet will travel to Monmouth, Ore. for the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be held May 9 and 10.
