Track and Field Hits Eight Provisional Marks, Two Auto and One School Record

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Outdoor Track and Field teams were in Bozeman competing at the Montana State Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 5.
 
The team finished the meet with eight new Great Northwest Athletic Conference provisional qualifying performances, two automatic qualifying marks, and a new MSU Billings record at the team's second meet of the outdoor season.
 
Robert Peterson continues to work on his successful sophomore season.  Peterson finished fourth overall, and first amongst non-Div. I athletes in the men's 1500 meter run with a GNAC automatic qualifying mark of 3:59.85.  Peterson's mark is also fourth-best in the GNAC this season.
 
Corrie Holm hit a new personal record that automatically qualified her for the GNAC Championships in the women's discus.  Holm threw for 41.32 meters which was a second-place finish in Bozeman, first in non-Div I. competition, and No. 1 in the GNAC this season.
 
The men's team had five more provisional qualifiers on the day.  Jamon Rodrigues in the Men's 10,000 meter ran 33:10.07, which is fifth in the GNAC this season.  Cole Campbell in the pole vault reached a height of 4.25 meters which is second-best in the GNAC.  After being named men's field athlete of the week for his performance in the hammer throw, Anthony Montanez hit a provisional mark of 14.89 meters in the shot put, which has him ranked at No. 4 in the GNAC.  Lewis Polkow ran a 56.18 in the 400 meter hurdles to provisionally qualify.  His time is No. 7 in the GNAC this season.  Nathan Vanderby hit a personal best and PQ'ed in the 400 meters with a time of 49.81
 
The women had had three student-athletes provisionally qualify in the GNAC.  Jinise Osborne and Mary Owen both did it in the 10,000 meter run with times of 40:19.88 and 41:12.95 respectively.  Renae Hepfner PQ'ed in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:57.16.
 
Courtney Henry, a two-sport student-athlete at MSU Billings recorded another notable performance; she set a new MSUB record in the women's javelin with a throw of 36.50 meters or 119"9'.  This mark eclipsed Delaware Steingruber 118'-9" (36.21) from 2012.  Henry's throw is currently 11th best in the GNAC.
 
"I thought our team had a really good day today," Head Coach Dave Coppock said. "The weather ended up cooperating, and I thought our team did really well at the meet.  Overall I am very pleased with the team's performance and look forward to the competition next week."
 
Teams competing in Bozeman included NCAA Div. I host school Montana State, the University of Montana, Eastern Washington, NCAA Div. II Montana State University Billings and NAIA Carroll College.
 
Next week MSU Billings travels to Spokane to take part in a big event hosted by Spokane Falls Community College.
 
"I come up feeling good about this meet at MSU," Coach Coppock said.  "Next week the team will be preparing for the big meet in Spokane."
