GRAND JUNCTION, Col. - The Montana State University Billings Men's tennis team's season came to end Friday evening, but it ended with a victory as they defeated Colorado Christian University 5-1 to take fifth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
MSUB 1 CSUP 5 MSUB began the day with an opening round loss to Colorado State University- Pueblo 1-5. In the RMAC Championship, the match is over and the players are pulled from the courts once one team wins five matches to clinch the overall match.
The Yellowjackets came out of doubles down 1-2. The number two team of
Eric De Romas and
Kavindu Gamage won an impressive victory in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreak). The Number won team of
Brandon Beardsley and
Josh Hedderig fell 5-8 as did the number three team of
Austin Kische and
Daniil Gorkov.
Hedderig fell in singles 0-6, 1-6, Kische lost 1-6, 1-6 and Gorkov was defeated 0-6, 0-6, to give CSUP the five points they needed to clinch the match.
MSUB 5 CCU 1 The Yellowjackets dominated the fifth and sixth place game against Colorado Christian. Coming out of doubles MSUB carried a 2-1 advantage after wins by the number two team of DeRomas and Gamage (8-1) and the numbe three team of Kische and Gorkov (8-0). The one slip up came at number one doubles when Beardsley and Hedderig fell to CCU 5-8.
MSUB made quick work of singles as Gamage dominated 6-0, 6-1 while playing number four singles; Kische also won 6-1, 6-3 and Gorkov rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to secure the match and allow MSUB to finish fifth place this season. When the match was clinched, Breadsley was down 1-4 in the first set, Hedderig was winning 5-0 in the first as well and De Romas was winning 6-1, 3-0 in the second set.
"We ended our season with first round losses followed by wins from both teams," head coach Lew Kosich said. "While the results were disappointing, we are very young losing only one senior from both teams. Kavindu has been a great player and his contributions will be missed. All of our guys showed promise and we will look to build on this experience and be much stronger next year."
