BILLINGS, Mont. – Wrapping up its regular season schedule on Saturday, the Montana State University Billings men's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback at the hands of visiting Colorado Mesa on the MSUB Tennis Courts.
 
The Yellowjackets (1-10, 1-4 RMAC) lost both of the doubles matches played and 4 of 5 singles matches. Freshman Robert Pike picked up the lone win of the day for MSUB, winning his singles contest 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) over Peter Hartvigsen in a hard-fought No. 5 matchup.
 
"Robbie had a great win in singles," said MSUB head coach Becky King. "He lost some momentum in the second set but was able to push through the tiebreaker for a win."
 
Santiago de la Rosa Mora also pushed his opponent to a third-set tiebreaker, but Jordan Lyden ended up with the win 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6). "Santiago put up a great fight," King said. "If a couple of key points would have gone differently the match could have gone either way."


In doubles play, it took a strong effort from Lyden and Spencer Weinberg to hold off de la Rosa Mora and Austin Kische, as the CMU duo picked up a narrow 9-7 win. Andres Garcia-Rojas and Cody Freischlag had no problem with the MSUB team of Pike and Josh Hedderig, cruising to an 8-1 victory.
 
At No. 2 singles, Weinberg rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kische, and Garcia-Rojas followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brandon Beardsley at No. 3 singles. Freischlag completed the team's victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hedderig at No. 4 singles.
 
Pike was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Match for the Yellowjackets as he picked up the singles win.
 
With the victory CMU improved to 16-6 on the season and the Mavericks are now 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
