ORLANDO, Flo.- The Montana State University Billings men's tennis team earned a split on their final day of competition. The Yellowjackets beat St. Cloud State University 5-4, but were then defeated by Palm Beach Atlantic University 1-8 to end the trip.
MSUB 5 vs. SCSU 4
MSU-Billings came out of doubles play with a 2-1 advantage as the number one team of
Christian Fischer and
Josh Hedderig won their match 8-3 along with the number three team of
Kavindu Gamage and
Austin Kische won 9-8 (7-5 in the tie breaker). The number two team,
Brandon Beardsley and
Eric De Romas fell to SCSU 5-8.
Only needing three victories in singles to clinch the match, Hedderig (playing at number three) clinched the fifth point with a 6-2, 1-6 6-1 victory over Joga Oris of SCSU after Fischer (playing at number one) beat Joga Poli in stright sets 6-2, 6-3 and Gamage (playing at number five) defeated Daniel Becker 6-2, 6-3.
Playing at number two singles, Beardsley lost to Viktor Kasak 4-6, 5-7 and DeRomas (playing at number four) was forced to retire after winning a tightly contested first set 7-6 (7-2 on the tie breaker) and was down 1-5 in the second. His retire came after the match was clinched for MSUB.
Austin Kische fell to Nate Cherry in straight sets 2-6, 2-6 at number six singles.
'It was a great defining match for our men's team," head coach Lew Kosich said. "It was a nice solid match against a team the typically makes in to the NCAA post season. We had good efforts up and down the line, it was a tough well fought match."

The Yellowjackets ran into a tough div. II opponent in the sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic. The sail fish cruised through doubles play, sweeping positions one through three. Fischer and Hedderig lost 5-8, Beardsley and DeRomas fought hard and lost 7-9 while Gamage and
Daniil Gorkov fell 4-8.
Gamage earned the lone Yellowjacket point playing number five singles and winning in straight sets over Nicholas Battistini 6-1, 6-3.
The Yellowjackets leave Florida with 2-4 record overall on the year and will open up conference play at home in Billings on April fourth and fifth.
