Woodin Interview

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game over Central Washington University on Saturday, Feb. 15, 60-39.

It was "Pink Zone" Night at Alterowitz Gymnasium as MSU Billings decked the gym in pink to honor Breast Cancer Survivors, and to raise funds for the EVA project at St. Vincent Healthcare.  Before the game, all cancer survivors in attendance were invited to the floor to receive a carnation in recognition of their fight, and to take a photo with both basketball teams.  The EVA project is dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness and to provide free mammograms to women in need in the Billings area.

"Our players really enjoy playing in our annual PINK ZONE game," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "We appreciate the support that St. V's and the EVA Project has provided our program, and it is nice to raise breast cancer awareness while also raising funds for a great cause."

In the first half, both teams struggled from the field as Montana State University Billings (20-5, 12-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) was 7-38 from the field for 18 percent and Central Washington University was 9-21.  Both teams ended the first half with 21 points each.

Bobbi Knudsen for MSUB finished the first half with 10 of the Yellowjackets 21 points.

"I was proud of our players tonight as they really worked hard despite not shooting very well in the first half," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "Central Washington played very hard as well as we struggled to score in the first half."

In the second half the Yellowjackets brought their shooting up to 41 percent and shot 46.7 percent from the three-point arc as they made a run in the middle of the second half to break away from the Wildcats.

Two free-throws by Knudsen would start a 13-2 run to put MSUB up 44-28 with 12:12 left.  A jump-shot by Amber Moser would pull CWU to within 12, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would come, as MSU Billings would continue to apply pressure, pulling ahead by as much as 25.

"Defensively we were very consistent tonight," Coach Woodin said.  "I thought we did a great job on the defensive boards and we communicated well as CWU ran a lot of different sets against us."

MSUB outrebounded CWU by 15, 43-28.

Chelsea Banis finished the game for MSUB with a game-high 12 rebounds, which also matches her season-high.  Janiel Olson had 11.

Knudsen was the game's high-scorer as she finished with 18 points and six assists.  Quinn Peoples had three three-pointers and ended the game with 10 points.

Brandy Kumm was 3-4 from the field and 2-2 from three-point territory as she finished the game with eight points – a new career-high for her.

"For the most part I liked our shot selection on offense," Coach Woodin stated.  "But, it was nice in the second half to finally see our shots start to fall."

Central Washington University (6-17, 1-14 GNAC) had two players finish in double-digits in points.  Jasmine Parker was the team's high-scorer as she was 5-8 from the field to end the game with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Moser was 5-9 and added 10 points while grapping five rebounds.

Next week the Yellowjackets travel to Monmouth, Ore. to face Western Oregon University on Thursday, Feb. 20 before heading to Lacey, Wash. to take on St. Martin's University on Saturday, Feb. 22.  Both games will begin at 7 PM Pacific Time and have live video and live stats available at MSUBSports.com.

"Next week's road trip will be a great challenge for us," Coach Woodin said.  "Western Oregon defeated us down there last year and St. Martin's is always tough at home.  We will need to be ready as it is a difficult task to win on the road in the GNAC."
