Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – Reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year Fredy Razo scored three times for a hat trick, as the Montana State University Billings men's soccer team lost its final game of the season 3-0 to Northwest Nazarene Saturday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field.
Prior to the game, MSUB honored its four graduating seniors, presenting
Kyle Emerick,
Matt Brink,
Grady Bryson and
Andres Moreano-Enriquez with plaques commemorating their dedication and contributions to the Yellowjacket soccer program.
"We have to thank our seniors for their loyal service to the program over the span of their careers," said MSUB head coach
Alex Balog. "We now need to look at ourselves and identify where, what, and how we can improve. We are getting better, and the difference between this season and last season is massive. That being said, we have a long way to go."
Razo upped his team-high goal tally to 12 on the season, as NNU improved to 14-3-1 overall and 10-2-1 in GNAC play. With the loss, MSUB finished its season with a record of 6-9-3 and 6-7-1 in conference action.
MSUB outshot NNU 9-7 on the match, but Crusader goalkeeper Ryan Foo came up with four saves on all of the Yellowjackets' shots on target. Razo was the only player to take a shot for NNU, accounting for all seven of the team's shots and all five of its shots on target.
It didn't take long for the Crusaders to jump in front. Steven Garcia toed the ball into the box and Michael Mollay ran onto it as Lohmann came off of his line. Mollay redirected the ball with his heel through the six-yard box, and an oncoming Razo slid into the ball and knocked it into the net in the fifth minute.
Rhys Lambert cracked MSUB's first shot of the game a few minutes later, and it took a diving save from Foo to knock the ball out of bounds and prevent a goal.
Building its attack out of the back, the Crusaders pushed forward in the 14th minute. Garcia lifted a ball over MSUB's back line with the outside of his right foot that was controlled by Razo. After beating a trio of Yellowjacket defenders into the box, he calmly rolled the ball into the back of the net inside the far post.
Again responding quickly,
Julian Toenges found himself with the ball in the box and forced a point-blank save by Foo. Brink collected the ball in the box several seconds later, and Foo again knocked down a powerful shot to keep the score at 2-0.
Playing with a strong wind at its back to open the second half, Razo scored his third goal of the game with 10 minutes gone out of the break. Marshall Hartley carried the ball into the left corner, curled in a cross, and Razo met it with his head from six yards out to beat new MSUB goalkeeper
Joe Scott.
Razo nearly scored a fourth goal, as he gathered the ball from 12 yards out with an open net.
Jesper Fries dashed to the goal line and knocked down the shot before it reached the goal.
NNU protected its lead well throughout the second half, minimizing MSUB's chances towards goal. With less than 10 minutes remaining, the 'Jackets earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Emerick's shot was on frame, but Foo held it to prevent a goal.
With less than three minutes remaining, the Yellowjackets' four seniors were subbed out of the game drawing a standing ovation from the crowd in attendance.
