BURNABY, B.C. – The Montana State University Billings men's soccer team was defeated on the road by Simon Fraser University, falling 3-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
In a match which saw both teams get up and down the field, firing a large quantity of shots, the Yellowjackets (6-5-6, 5-3-3 GNAC) came up on the wrong end of the scoreline, falling to the Red Leafs (5-10-2, 4-7 GNAC) in Burnaby, resulting in a season split between the two squads on the season after MSUB's win to open GNAC play back in early October. Simon Fraser attempted 24 shots in total, putting 13 looks on goal, but despite 19 shots and 8 on target for MSUB, the Yellowjackets would be unlucky not to score one of their own throughout the match.
Momentum continued to shift hands in the opening stages of the first half, with both teams controlling stretches of play in the first 20 minutes as they looked for an opening goal. But in the 22
nd minute, the Red Leafs would take the lead with a quick counterattack to force the 'Jackets to play from behind. MSUB would threaten to equalize with more looks as the half wore on, but would be unable to find an equalizer before halftime. The hosts would then double their advantage shortly after the beginning of the second half, scoring in the 48
th minute to provide a cushion to see out the game with. Despite their continued efforts and promising chances, MSUB would continue to be denied a goal, and following the Red Leaf's third goal of the contest in the 85
th minute, it would seal a disappointing result for MSUB in it's second to last game of the regular season.
Ryan Hanley attempted a team high five shots, putting two looks on goal.
Matteo Bosch shot four times, putting one shot on goal, while
Roddy Lewis fired three shots with one on goal.
Bjarne Fedkenhauer attempted two shots with one on target, and the trio of
So Nagano,
Isaac Perez, and
Sam Kemmer each put their lone shots on goal.
Kolja Thomas and
Carter Griffith each attempted one shot. Goalkeeper
Fred Reiter made a career-high ten saves.
THE BUZZ: Hanley was selected as the Intermountain Health Player of the Game… heading into the final game of the regular season, MSUB currently sits in third place in the GNAC and controls it's own fate, with a win or draw guaranteeing the 'Jackets highest standings finish in program history since a tied third place finish in 2017.
