3 first-half goals push Simon Fraser to 3-1 win over MSUB men

Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – Scoring twice in the opening seven minutes and three times in the first half, Simon Fraser collected a 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Montana State University Billings on Saturday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field.

The Clan improved to 8-4-2 on the season and the team is now 6-3-2 in conference play. The Yellowjackets fell to 5-7-3 in 2014, and are an even 5-5-1 in GNAC action.

The Clan took control early on in the match, winning a corner kick just six minutes in. Alex Rowley curled in a cross, and Alexander Kleefeldt punched the ball in from six yards out.

SFU doubled its lead less than two minutes later, as Jovan Blagojevic beat a defender and crossed the ball to Nico Espinosa who finished it from five yards out.

The 'Jackets had a chance to equalize almost immediately, but a shot by Julian Toenges from the top of the box was saved by Brandon Watson.

Winning a free kick from 25 yards out, Rhys Lambert fired a sinking shot towards goal that missed just over the bar in the 11th minute.

Lambert had another strong attempt towards goal 15 minutes into the match, firing a half-volley from the right corner of the box that skimmed the upper-back part of the net out-of-bounds.

Midway through the first, Blagojevic collected a ball and made a long run down the left side as he beat several MSUB defenders into the box. His left-footed shot from 12 yards out deflected off of an MSUB defender, rolling into the net to make the score 3-0.

The Clan protected their lead into halftime, keeping control of possession of the ball through the closing minutes of the first half.

Kleefeldt had an opportunity in the opening minutes of the second half, pushing a header attempt on a cross by Robert Hyams over the crossbar.

The 'Jackets avoided allowing another goal with 15 minutes gone in the second, as Joel Malouf had his shot blocked. Blagojevic controlled the carom and had a wide-open shot from the top of the box, but Tom Lohmann extended for a great diving save.

SFU continued to create chances throughout the second half, placing 13 total shots on goal throughout the game. The barrage of offense kept Lohmann busy, as he made nine save on the match.

MSUB's breakthrough came in the 83rd minute, as Colin Ralston managed to tap in a loose ball inside the box to give the 'Jackets a goal.

SFU totaled 20 shots on the match, compared with seven by MSUB. The Clan also won five corner kicks while not allowing any. Watson came up with two saves on three shots on goal in the match.

NEXT UP: The 'Jackets welcome Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific to Yellowjacket Field next weekend as GNAC play winds down. MSUB and SMU will kick off at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30, and the match against SPU is scheduled for Nov. 1 at 2 p.m.
