Woodin Interview

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State University Billings Women's Basketball team won their game against Simon Fraser University Thursday Jan. 2, 81-63.

MSU Billings (9-4, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) used an 11-2 run in the last three minutes of the first half, and a solid second half on both ends of the court to shut down the Clan of Simon Fraser in Alterowitz Gymnasium.

"It was a very nice win for us against a good team," Head Coach Kevin Woodin said.  "I thought both teams looked rusty in the first half, but we settled down and started to play better.  The run we had to go up by 10 near the end of the first half was really important.  I thought we rebounded the ball very well tonight on both ends and that was a major factor in the outcome."

Both teams played tight in the first half as the score was tied at 25-all 12 minutes into the game.  But, at 3:47 in the first half, a foul by SFU's Kia Van Laare on a three-point shot by MSUB's Bobbi Knudsen would send Knudsen to the free-throw line.  Knudsen would make all-three shots, sparking a Yellowjackets rally.  MSUB would add nine more points to the MSUB total, ending the first half, MSUB 43, SFU 33.

The Yellowjackets would use some excellent defense and some key plays by their bench to increase their lead in the second half, never letting the Clan to within more than six.

"We had great offensive balance tonight and we got solid production from our bench," Coach Woodin stated.  "Austin Hanser sparked us on both ends while everyone else made positive contributions too."

Hanser took two key charges in the second half, including one at the 8:24 mark that would have the Clan's Erin Chambers foul out of the game.

Simon Fraser's (7-3, 1-1 GNAC) Chambers had a team-high 17 points.  Katie Lowen with 11 points, and Chelsea Reist with 12 would also score in the double-digits.  Rebecca Langmead had a team-high seven rebounds, while Lowen and Marie-Line Petit both recorded three assists in the game.

Four Yellowjackets had points in the double-digits.  Knudsen had a game-high 18 points and six assists.  Janiel Olson had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Chelsea Banis was 5-7 from the field with 11 points and seven rebounds.  Kayleen Goggins had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The second half the Yellowjackets also had some significant play from the bench as MSUB ended up with 30 points from their non-starters, including 22 in the second half.

Hanser recorded a new season-high nine points and a new career-high of seven rebounds.

Teneka Capouch came into the game playing seven minutes scoring seven points and grabbing six rebounds for MSUB.  Alisha Breen was 1-2, but 6-8 from the free-throw line coming in with eight points.  Quinn Peoples came in going 2-4 from the three-point arc ending up with six points.

MSUB shot 38 percent from the field, but the Yellowjackets came up with 20 more rebounds than the Clan, 49-29.  They had more second-chance points, 23-10.  MSU Billings also had more bench points, and more points in the paint, 36-22.

Next on Montana State University Billings' slate is a game against conference opponent Western Washington University.

"Western Washington represents a great challenge for us," Coach Woodin stated. "But, it is one we are looking forward to.  They play extremely hard and are very well-coached.

MSUB will host Western Washington on Saturday Jan. 4.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM.  Live video and live stats will be available at MSUBSports.com.
