Men’s Soccer: Falcons Turn Away Jackets 3-2

Box Score

Billings, Mont. – Seattle Pacific University started fast and finished strong as they defeated the Montana State Billings men's soccer team 3-2. The Yellowjackets still remain winless in 2013 and fall to 0-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the GNAC.

The Falcons controlled possession for the majority of the contest, owning the 15-8 shot advantage and 6-3 shot on goal advantage.

SPU's attack proved to be too much for MSUB as they scored all their goals in the first half; opening the game up with a header at 21:14 by Bryson Pavel. Danny Olivas was credited with the assist.

Following a foul by the Yellowjackets at 28:14, Seattle Pacific received a penalty kick and Matt Merchant capitalized on the opportunity, giving the opposition the 2-0 lead.

With a comfortable advantage, the Falcons added one more score as Stephen MacDonald, who led the Falcons in points entering the match, put SPU ahead 3-0 in the 33rd minute.

Settle Pacific entered the intermission leading the Jackets by three goals.

Despite the game being out of reach, MSU Billings continued to play hard and put together late game heroics to get back into the match. The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard at 58:04, as Sam Butterworth gave Thorge Jess a quality pass leaving him one on one with the goal keeper. Jess fired a shot from 16 yards out past Cody Lang bringing MSUB within two of the Falcons (3-1).

The Yellowjackets continued to remain competitive and received a penalty kick in 88th minute after a red card on SPU's Taylor Backous. Jesper Fries completed the attempt, cutting the Falcons advantage down by one (3-2).

While valiant, MSU Billings' efforts would not be able to overcome the three goal hole that was dug in the first 45 minutes, allowing Seattle Pacific to claim the 3-2 victory.

Eoin Hurley made his eighth start of the season and registered a game high three saves.

The Yellowjackets return home for their next match, hosting South Dakota School of Mines on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 1:30 PM.
