Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings showed no signs of a hangover effect from their battle with the No. 1 team in the nation, as they played Western Washington University to a 0-0 double overtime draw. The Yellowjackets now sit at 0-4-2 overall, and 0-1-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
MSUB's feat is even more impressive than meets the eye, as they played with one down for the majority of the contest.
Matt Brink received a red card at 36:55 in the first half.
"I thought that tactically this was our best game of the season so far," stated head coach
Alex Balog. "Our guys showed discipline for the majority of the match."
"This was our fourth overtime match in six games and we were set on not giving anything away this time," Balog said. "I think that our first clean sheet of the season should give our whole team and especially our back line a lot of confidence."
The Vikings owned the slight 13-12 shot advantage, but the Jackets landed seven shots on target compared to Western's four.
Keegan Rogers started between the pipes for the opposition and recorded a game high six saves.
Eoin Hurley made his six consecutive start this season at keeper and registered three saves on the day.
While MSU Billings wasn't able to find the net,
Aodhan Brownlee led the attack with three shots, all on goal.
Sam Butterworth,
Landon Horst and
Chad Ward all recorded two shots each and one shot on goal each.
The Vikings fall to 3-2-1 overall, and 1-0-1 in the GNAC, and look ahead to a home match with the University of Mary on Sept. 26.
Next up for the Yellowjackets is a trip to Lacey, Wash. to compete against Saint Martin's University on Sept. 26.
"We're going to Washington with a lot of confidence and we're going to fight hard to get our first win," stated Balog.
