Men’s Tennis Finishes Third in RMAC

Match Results vs. CSUP

Match Results vs. WNMU

Billings, Mont. – In their final day of competition in the regular season, Montana State Billings men's tennis team split their final two matches as they defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 8-1, and fell 3-6 to Western New Mexico Saturday, April 6. The Yellowjackets finish the regular season 6-11, and 3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, earning a No. 3 seed in the RMAC Championship Tournament.

MSUB dominated the Thunderwolves, sweeping the doubles matches, then clinching the victory with Navin Marimuthu and Brad Knutson winning their No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches. CSU-Pueblo scored their lone point in the contest when Christian Fischer was forced to retire from play with an illness.

Brandon Beardsley, Kavindu Gamage and Josh Hedderrig also recorded singles victories in the event.

Against Western New Mexico, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when they won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Knutson and Gamage scored the Yellowjackets first point, when they downed Matthieu Covizzi and Jorge Carretero 9-7 in their No. 3 doubles bout.

The Yellowjackets struggled in singles play as Marimuthu and Hedderig tallied the only two points for the team, as Western went ahead to remain undefeated in conference play (4-0).

“We had a good trip with two good wins; Christian's illness definitely hurt us against Western New Mexico,” stated head coach Lew Kosich. “Finishing third in the conference puts us in a good position for a rematch with Colorado Mesa in the semifinals and another shot at Western New Mexico in the finals in the RMAC tournament.”

MSUB will have two weeks off before they head to Grand Junction, Colo. to compete in the RMAC Championship Tournament Friday, April 19-20.
