Billings, Mont. – The Yellowjackets men's and women's tennis teams are anxiously awaiting the start of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament; taking place on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. After a two week layoff, Montana State Billings will head down to Grand Junction, Colo. to compete for a conference title.
MSUB's women's team enters the RMAC Championship tournament as a No. 5 seed after finishing fifth in the conference with a record of 1-4. The Yellowjackets defeated Colorado Christian for their lone conference victory of the season. MSUB will be competing with the No. 4 seed Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Mary Conwell and
Madeline Loomis both lead the team with six overall victories, while Loomis has had the most success in singles play with five wins in 2013.
The Thunderwolves ended their conference play with a 2-3 record, and Gia Montoya leads the team with nine overall victories. In their last meeting CSU-Pueblo defeated MSUB 5-4. The Jackets and Thunderwolves will start play on Saturday, April 20; with the victor squaring off with the No. 1 seed Western New Mexico University in the semifinals Saturday evening.
“Our women have shown steady improvement throughout the season,” stated head coach Lew Kosich. “We will be putting one of the youngest teams in the RMAC on the court. Our team has developed a strong belief in ourselves, and is prepared to surprise anyone that is looking past us.”
MSU Billings' men's team finished the regular season 6-11 overall and third in the RMAC with a 3-2 mark. Entering the conference tournament as a No. 3 seed, the Yellowjackets will face the No. 6 seed Colorado Christian University. MSUB defeated the Cougars 7-2 in their most recent matchup.
Brandon Beardsley leads the team with 18 overall victories, while
Christian Fischer and
Kavindu Gamage are tied at second with 16 wins. Senior
Navin Marimuthu, has recorded 14 overall victories in 2013 and is currently ranked No. 1 all-time in singles, doubles and overall victories in the Jackets' program history. The Cougars are currently winless this season (0-8, 0-5 RMAC).
“It is show time; this is what we have been preparing for all season,” Kosich said. “We know the RMAC Championship Tournament will be a dogfight. However, we are definite contenders with a strong belief in ourselves, and are prepared to represent our team and the university proudly. We will leave all we have on the courts.”
MSUB and Colorado Christian will start their event Saturday, April 20, with the winner playing the No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa University, Saturday evening in the semifinals.
