Billings, Mont. – Montana State Billings men's and women's tennis teams will head down south to the “Sunshine State” to compete in a tournament over the spring break holiday. The tournament will be held in Orlando, Fla. from March 5-9 at the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
The Yellowjackets women's team will face four opponents: Bellarmine University (March 5), Saginaw Valley State University (March 6), Grand Valley State University (March 7) and Wayne State University (March 9). MSUB has been off since Feb. 9 where they faced Tarleton State University in the Grand Canyon Invitational.
In the Feb. 27 International Tennis Association's Division II national rankings, Grand Valley State (15-3) ranks No. 38 and Wayne State (16-3) holds a No. 45 ranking. Bellarmine women's team has started 2013 in favorable fashion, with a 5-2 overall record and current three game win streak. While the Jackets have yet to win a contest this season,
Emily Paffhausen and
Madeline Loomis have won several single matches for MSUB.
MSU Billings men's tennis team currently stands at 1-6 overall, with their lone victory coming against Sonoma State University who held an ITA national ranking of 41
st at the time. Thus far this season the Yellowjackets have faced two Division I opponents (Montana State University and Utah State University) in three separate matches, playing the Bobcats twice in 2013.
The Jackets will compete against five opponents in Orlando, Fla.: Bellarmine University (March 5), Ohio Dominican University (March 6), Cedarville University (March 7), South Dakota State University (March 8) and Wayne State University (March 9).
Bellarmine is currently 8-1 on the season, losing their most recent match 3-6 against The University of Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 24. Division I opponent, South Dakota State is currently 2-7 on the year, defeating Metro State 7-2 and Nebraska Wesleyan 9-0.
Navin Marimuthu and
Brandon Beardsley have been a quality duo, recording two wins on the year.
Christian Fischer has recorded three singles victories in 2013.
"Set-up, approach, close, volley, DISCIPLINE," stated head coach Lew Kosich. "Doing ordinary things extra-ordinarily well is our focus. We have several days of hard work in front of us."
The tournament will be the final tune-up before the Jackets head into their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule starting March 29 against Colorado Mesa University.
