Billings, Mont. – The Yellowjackets men's tennis team put together two great efforts in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener; competing against Colorado Mesa University Friday, March 29 and Metropolitan State University of Denver Saturday, March 30. While MSU Billings lost a close match to the Mavericks 4-5, they bounced back strong against the Roadrunners, sweeping them 9-0.
The Jackets owned a 2-1 lead going into singles play as
Brandon Beardsley and
Josh Hedderig won their No. 2 doubles match, and
Brad Knutson and
Kavindu Gamage took care of business in their No. 3 doubles bout.
Colorado Mesa came back strong in singles play, winning four out of six matches to capture their tenth victory (10-11, 1-0 RMAC) of the season. Beardsley defeated Taylor Macres 6-4, 6-3 in No. 4 singles, and Gamage won his No. 5 singles match 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (3) against Brason Hollabaugh. MSUB falls to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in RMAC play.
“We lost a tough fought match to a good team,” stated Lew Kosich.
In the Metro State matchup, the Yellowjackets came out on fire sweeping the doubles matches 3-0. Beardsley,
Navin Marimuthu and
Christian Fischer have now recorded six doubles victories each in 2013.
With momentum in hand, MSUB clinched the contest win with Marimuthu and Fischer winning their No. 1 and No. 2 singles bouts. Marimuthu defeated Gabriel Vlahos 6-3, 6-4; and Fischer won 6-2, 6-1 against Adrian Delvaux to record his ninth singles victory of the year. Beardsley and Knutson also won their singles matches in straight sets; as the Yellowjackets went on to claim the 9-0 victory.
“The guys, up and down the line, played with focus and purpose; and came onto the courts and took care of business,” Kosich said. “We have learned that the RMAC is a tough and evenly matched conference. We did great work today, and know we have a real dogfight ahead of us next weekend.”
MSU Billings (4-10, 1-1 RMAC) squares off with Colorado Christian University on Friday, April 5 in Lakewood, Colo. then travels to Pueblo, Colo. to compete against Colorado State University – Pueblo and Western New Mexico University on Saturday, April 6.
