Billings, Mont. – The Yellowjackets baseball team swept their Sunday double-header against Saint Martin's University 10-1, 5-3. MSU Billings win's the series 3-1 as they improve to 8-15-1 overall, and 4-4 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Game 1: MSUB  10 – SMU  1

Junior right-hand pitcher Joe Andriolo had another brilliant outing, as he only allowed one run in eight innings on the mound, striking out six Saints' batters en route to his second consecutive win in 2013 (2-3). He was supported by a great offensive performance that generated 11 hits and 10 runs. Justin Harcharik (1-4) and Colby Robison (2-5) tallied three RBI's each. Brad Birch, Orrin Pyrah and Colter Sternhagen recorded the team's other three RBI's.

Robison did a great job of finding gaps in Saint Martin's defense, recording MSUB's only triple and one of their three doubles. Drew Fosnes and Sternhagen posted quality numbers at the plate, with each going 2-4 on the day, and scoring one run of their own.

Defensively, the Yellowjackets only had one error in the contest. Birch recorded a game high 15 putouts.

Saint Martin's had eight hits total, with Alex Bielaski and Travis Shaw going 2-4 in the contest. Shaw recorded the team's only RBI.

Josh Moss started for the Saint's and had a rough day at the helm, giving up seven earned runs in 4.1 innings. He falls to 0-3 on the year.

MSUB took an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the first and second inning. They later tacked on five more runs in the top of the fifth to build their lead to 7-0 going into the bottom of the fifth. Robison's triple started the onslaught, as he brought in Fosnes and Brody Miller.

Robison, Sternhagen and Mack Unruh would score the other three runs in the inning for the Jackets. Saint Martin's finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, with Shaw's single bringing Blake Lord across.

This would be the only success the Saints would have in the game as they went scoreless for the rest of the contest. MSU Billings added a run in the top of the eighth and two in the top of the ninth to cruise away with the nine point victory (10-1).

Game 2: MSUB 5 – SMU 3

The second contest was more even and filled with suspense, needing extra innings to determine the winner. MSU Billings followed suite with the first game, taking another 2-0 lead early in the contest. Miller singled through the left side and drove Birch and Pyrah home in the top of the third. Saint Martin's countered in the bottom of the inning when Bobby Twedt's single brought in Stephen Mahnken, bringing the score to 2-1.

After both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth, Austin Rue scored off a Robison single to give MSUB the 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth. Bobby Ragasa canceled the Saints hitters in the bottom of the inning, striking out two batters, and forcing the opposition to go three-up, three-down.

The Yellowjackets could not extend their lead in the top of the seventh, leaving one on base. Saint Martin's came back strong in the bottom half, scoring two runs to even the score at 3-3.

Heading into extra innings, the Saints made costly mistakes that MSUB took advantage of. Miller got on base off a throwing error by Jake Huskey, and advanced to second on the play. Fosnes' sacrificial bunt put Miller on third; then Robison was intentionally walked to reach base.

Anthony LaDue balked, advancing all runners; bringing Miller in to give the Jackets the 4-3 lead. Disagreeing with the call, Saint Martin's head coach, Ken Garland was ejected.

After Unruh flied out to advance Robison to third, he would then steal home to give MSUB the 5-3 advantage. Travis Vincent closed the deal for the Yellowjackets; forcing Bielaski to ground out, then forcing Spencer Dodd to ground out into a 4-6-3 double play.

Tanner Watson started for MSUB and recorded three strikeouts along with Ragasa. Vincent was credited with the win. At the plate Miller finished 1-3, with two RBI's and one run scored.

Brad Banker got the start for Saint Martin's and finished with four strikeouts in 6.1 inning of work. LaDue was credited with the loss. Twedt finished 2-4 with one RBI.

“Our guys played well today; and our pitching was solid in both games,” stated head coach Rob Bishop. “Andriolo was terrific again and we also competed well at the plate. Overall it was a great series win.”

As this road trip concludes, the Jackets return home to host their first series of the 2013 season. MSUB will square off with Northwest Nazarene University in two double-headers at Dehler Park, Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16.
