"We are very excited to play in the Disney Tip-Off tournament for the first time," Head Coach
Kevin Woodin said. "We are looking forward to the event; I have talked to other teams who have participated in it in the past and they really speak highly of it."
MSU Billings Exhibition Games
MSU Billings has played two preseason exhibitions games en route to their Calif. trip: the first a game against NCAA Div I team University of Montana that took place two weeks ago in which UM barely escaped with a 69-65 win, and the second on Monday night as MSU Billings went across town to face rival Rocky Mountain College where the Yellowjackets took care of business with a 90-58 win over the Battlin' Bears.
Montana State University Billings was picked as the preseason favorite in the early coaches' poll released by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). Head Coach
Kevin Woodin is returning for his 10
th season with the Yellowjackets. The team returns four starters including Preseason Player of the Year (GNAC) and Preseason All-American selection (Women's Basketball Coaches Association)
Bobbi Knudsen. Last year Knudsen averaged 17.8 ppg which was second in the GNAC, led the conference in assists with an average 6.2 per game, and had a 2.4 assist to turnover ratio which also led the conference.
Janiel Olson and
Kayleen Goggins are also returning starters for the Yellowjackets and both were picked as Preseason All-Conference by the GNAC. Olson averaged 10.2 points per game, and was second in the conference in rebounds with 9.6. Goggins averaged 11.6 points last season for the Yellowjackets and was second on the team in rebounds with a 4.7 per game average.
Against the Grizzlies
Janiel Olson had a double-double on the night, leading the team in rebounds with 14 and tied for first in points with 18. She shot 55 percent from the field and was 4-5 from 3-point range. Goggins had eight rebounds and nine points in the contest.
Bobbi Knudsen went 6-20, and 2-8 from beyond the arc. She tied with Olson for a team-high 18 points.
Chelsea Banis had eight points and seven rebounds, while
Quinn Peoples was 3-5 on the night and 2-2 in three-pointers.
In rebounds MSU Billings had a team total of 42 as Olson had a team high 14. Knudsen had a team high 7 assists in the game.
Coach Woodin on the Game:
"I thought we battled a very good Grizzly team for the entire game. I am really proud of our team tonight. The University of Montana is extremely good; especially their high-low game and their post play. I thought defensively we made them work very hard. In the first half they had us down by nine points and I really like the run we made late in the first half to get back in to the game. Janiel (Olson) and Kayleen (Goggins) shot the ball very well in the first half. Overall, I am extremely pleased with how our team competed. It was just a great game to be a part of; a great opportunity. We just need to keep working and improving everyday as we look to the rest of our season and the start of conference play."
Against the Battlin' Bears
Kayleen Goggins was the high-scorer on the night for the Yellowjackets; she went 7-12 from the floor and was 3-3 in 3-pointers for a team-high 19 points.
Bobbi Knudsen was 8-15 and had 17 points while leading MSUB in assists with nine.
Janiel Olson added 12 points.
Quinn Peoples scored nine points from the bench as 29 points came from Montana State Billings' non-starters.
Alisha Breen went 3-4 and 1-1 from beyond the arc for nine points and
Tenika Capouch added six.
Montana State Billings out rebounded the Bears 37-25. Knudsen had eight, while Olson and Capouch both had six for MSUB.
The Yellowjackets had only eight team turn-overs in the game while grabbing five steals.
Coach Woodin on the Game:
"I was really happy with the way we played, especially in the second half. I thought Rocky was really ready to go. They made a lot of perimeter shots on us and they spread us out. But, I thought we persevered and I felt fortunate to go into half-time with a 12-point lead. In the second half we really played solidly defensively and offensively. We also took care of the ball. We had less than 10 turn-overs, which is good this early in the season."
The Tournament
Coach Woodin on the Teams and the Tournament:
"This tournament gives us an opportunity to play three quality teams that we have never played before. We need to continue to improve each week. Playing three games in three days is quite a challenge, but I believe our depth this year should pay dividends for us."
